Recently, I’ve been thinking about this quote: “A good product does not need a manual”, or however Steve Jobs put it—or was it truly his? Nonetheless, building a product with the young and aged in mind has made me question to what extent this statement holds true. Even though manuals for software products have become less prevalent since the early stages of the Fourth Industrial Revolution in the early 2000s, I believe they still hold much value for a significant population. One company that excels in this aspect is Slack. Besides offering an exceptionally intuitive UI for many users I’ve worked with, they provide numerous documentation and video guides on YouTube. I could argue that this was because they were aiming past a younger workforce. An excellent middle ground for this dilemma would be Nielsen’s Usability Heuristic #10: “Help and Documentation” - While ideally, a system shouldn’t require additional explanation, providing documentation can aid users in understanding how to accomplish their tasks effectively. This exploration has been a massive help while building Revaise, and even though I can’t check all the boxes at the beginning—It’s best to check the ones that matter most for my early customers. #buildinginpublic #revaise

I'm generalising, but elevating the importance of product design in software projects can often be a challenge. It’s relatively straightforward selling engineering capability but less so convincing stakeholders that design and experience can be the game-changer. In this post, I delve into why this is the case and why prioritising product design can lead to more efficient delivery, higher-quality work, happier users, and give you an edge.
💡For most users of your software, the user experience IS the software. So why do many teams continue to under-invest in product design?💡 In today’s competitive landscape, design is no longer just an add-on; it's essential. From enhancing user experience to streamlining delivery, design’s impact on software development is profound. Instil’s latest blog explores why prioritising product design can lead to faster delivery, higher-quality work, happier users, more efficient teams, and a competitive edge in the market. "In a wonderful way, Notion has collapsed the concept of a website and a document" 📓 With no board seats and low dilution, could this #InnovationOfTheWeek - Notion - flip the concept of "coopting disruption" on its head? (see: https://lnkd.in/eiPuryM7) Founder Ivan Zhao built the company from the notion that "you should be able to do as much with a word processor as you can with a blank piece of paper." (You can even see this in their fluid user design, it's like working on an infinite piece of paper) This concept has threaded Notion along to now call itself the "all-in-one workspace" app on its website. You can use it to take notes, build product roadmaps, calendars, use template galleries, and now, use its AI-enabled knowledge bot to find anything and get help with ideas. A recent Forbes article claims they 'might one day challenge the dominance of Microsoft and Google, which together control 99% of the $52 billion (2022 sales) productivity suite market, per Gartner.' (https://lnkd.in/ezmbHuin) Personally, as someone that has done the 'productivity tool tango' throughout her career, this kind of statement is music to my ears. And yet, the concept of the "does-it-all" app has remained elusive. What are your thoughts? Do you use Notion for your own productivity or at work? #innovation #software #siliconvalley #productivitytools

Have you seen your tech team implementing a solution based on technical feasibility at the cost of ease of use of the functionality? Technical Implementation & User Experience: Our goal is to design solutions that are technically solid and also meet user needs. This means making interfaces that are easy to use and understand while ensuring that users have a good experience. Striking the Balance: To find this balance, consider both technical possibilities and what users really need. Because the best tech solution is one which people can use easily and solves their problems. Making it User-Friendly: Focus on creating solutions that are intuitive. This means users should find it straightforward to navigate and get what they need without confusion or hassle. The Outcome: By paying attention to both the technical side and user experience, we can create solutions that are not only effective but also widely accepted and appreciated by our users. What we need to do is keep developers motivated to prioritize user experience as much as technical ease of implementation. In cases where technical simplicity and user experience seem at odds, we can find a middle ground that respects both aspects. How do you ensure your technical solutions are user-friendly? #techsolutions #userexperience #balancingact #techtalks

"When the loudest voices in the room understand the scale of an engineering challenge but not the skills required to create outstanding user experiences, one of the first things to be squeezed from an already constrained budget will be design." What those loud voices often overlook is that design doesn’t just shape the user experience; it streamlines frontend engineering and accelerates delivery, reducing long-term costs and stretching that budget a little further. #ProductDevelopment #design

Having the right tech stack can be a massive productivity booster. Too often companies will just cobble something together over years of being in business. I get it. Businesses grow organically and sometimes sporadically. However, having a well thought out integrated tech stack can be an absolute gamechanger. At Deltabit, we follow these key principles when building productivity-driving tech stacks: 1. Identify bottlenecks first before evaluating any new tools. 2. Prioritise solutions with robust integration capabilities. Disjointed systems just create busywork. 3. Emphasise intuitive UX and ease-of-adoption over complex offerings for most use-cases. 4. Build the stack ensuring technologies complement each other. Forming a unified environment. Achieving a big productivity boost requires thoughtfully choosing software that suits your specific workflows and objectives. You don’t want to get “shiny object syndrome” and just use the latest hot apps.
