Engineer of Excellent Products

Recently, I’ve been thinking about this quote: “A good product does not need a manual”, or however Steve Jobs put it—or was it truly his? Nonetheless, building a product with the young and aged in mind has made me question to what extent this statement holds true. Even though manuals for software products have become less prevalent since the early stages of the Fourth Industrial Revolution in the early 2000s, I believe they still hold much value for a significant population. One company that excels in this aspect is Slack. Besides offering an exceptionally intuitive UI for many users I’ve worked with, they provide numerous documentation and video guides on YouTube. I could argue that this was because they were aiming past a younger workforce. An excellent middle ground for this dilemma would be Nielsen’s Usability Heuristic #10: “Help and Documentation” - While ideally, a system shouldn’t require additional explanation, providing documentation can aid users in understanding how to accomplish their tasks effectively. This exploration has been a massive help while building Revaise, and even though I can’t check all the boxes at the beginning—It’s best to check the ones that matter most for my early customers. #buildinginpublic #revaise
