5 Curiosities You Didn’t Know About Stetson and Hulley Tower:   1. Did you know the story of these bells of opportunity? 🎶🔔 In 1915, the Eloise Chimes, consisting of 11 bells, arrived on campus in an unexpected manner. Originally destined for Pennsylvania, the canceled order led to Stetson seizing the opportunity to bring the chimes to campus. These bronze bells, ranging in size from 575 to 2,850 pounds, were installed in Hulley Tower in 1934.   2. Did you know this Hulley Tower secret? Hulley Tower was not just a bell tower; it also contains a mausoleum for President Lincoln Hulley and his wife, Eloise. Unfortunately, President Hulley passed away before the tower's completion. When the upper part of Hulley Tower was dismantled in 2005 due to safety concerns, only the mausoleum remained intact.   3. Did you know about the salvaged bells and their legacy? As part of the dismantling of Hulley Tower, the 11 bells were salvaged 🔔🔔🔔🔔🔔🔔🔔🔔🔔🔔🔔 Two were donated to community organizations, while four others found new homes across the Stetson campus. Today, six bells are displayed in campus and city locations, serving as a reminder of their legacy. Can you find out where they are?   4. Did you know that Stetson is rebuilding dreams? ✨ Reconstruction efforts are underway to restore Hulley Tower, symbolizing remembrance, resilience, and rebirth on campus. This project aims to honor the tower's architectural and historical significance and preserve its legacy for future generations. New York Chronicles #2 Welcome to my office at Columbia Business School (CBS)! Although I am a social scientist, so far my learnings are mainly in numbers. 📚 Ivy League university = more students? Columbia University has around 36 000 students (∼3000 in CBS). 📚 More students = more buildings? Columbia University owns 216 buildings in New York (nearly 13,950 sq ft). However, owning 216 buildings as a University still puts you only in second place in the real estate competition - New York University owns 115 buildings but more than 14,000 sq ft. 📚 More buildings = more costs? CBS is across 2 buildings (11 and 9 storeys high). These cost 700 million. Nearly 200 million were given by two billionaires. Sizable donations make a difference, hey? So, at the end of the day, it seems that more costs = more students. Here's some positivity about costs! This week, I had the fantastic opportunity to come together with other educators from across New Jersey to learn all about integrating Youth Participatory Action Research into the classroom. While this training was very fruitful for my dissertation research (with 5th graders), I left thinking about integrating YPAR into the elementary and early childhood classroom. This got me thinking about what type of skills and competencies we can focus on developing in our youngest learners so that when they enter middle and high school, they can be agents of their research. They can draw data-supported conclusions and inform decisions that impact their lives. This is how youth can become Citizens of the Now. However, this year, I am teaching preschool (I teach during the day and conduct my dissertation fieldwork after school). It was challenging and exciting to brainstorm ways that 4 and 5-year-olds can conduct their own research. How can they "collect data" and then "analyze" the data? We all know little kids love grabbing our phones and tablets and taking pictures all around them. They might not be able to write full sentences yet (although many can!), but they certainly can ask questions and even conduct a survey or interview (with support). They love questions! And they love finding connections between different observations. They love talking about big visuals and pictures. That sounds like data analysis to me... What do you think? In 2023, Off-course golf participation (Topgolf, simulator bars, etc.) increased by 19%, while On-course participation decreased by 8%. 2. From 2020 to 2022 — Female participation grew 15%, while male participation grew 2%. 3. Golf had a direct economic impact of $102 billion in the United States — an increase of 20% from 2016. 4. Golf has a supply-demand issue: Course supply has shrunk each of the last 18 years. However, total rounds have increased by nearly 100 million in the last four years. 5. Covid was able to bump golf rounds back to the Tiger Boom — two decades later. Industry Recommendations • You should follow everything the National Golf Foundation puts out. • Every golf course should purchase Noteefy 🔔. The golf boom also equals record-high cancelations. Noteefy helps courses recover hundreds of thousands of dollars each year. • There is not enough capital being deployed in the golf industry. Old Tom Ventures Club is changing that. • Passionate alumni are vital for mid-major college golf programs' survival amid changes in college athletics. Title IX may lead to program cuts nationwide. It's unfortunate, but college golf needs to live in reality. Let's get creative and raise money. Happy to connect and flush out ideas. A cold email inquiring about golf topics he couldn't research led him to tag me on a viral job post. My resume alone wouldn't have secured the opportunity; a reference did. The best mentors offer opportunities. A newsletter story about the innovative team at Grass Clippings led to a personal NIL consulting opportunity with their high-stakes par three golf league, the Grass League. Securing school groups to perform the National Anthem in minor league sports is nothing new; but when I was first hired by the Admirals as a sales rep, we only hosted a handful of schools each season. I saw a huge untapped market and an opportunity not only to earn commission, but a way to build fans at the grass-roots level as well. Fast forward a few years and the Admirals' "School Spirit Night" program has turned into a revenue generation and fan creation machine. Last season we hosted a school spirit night at 22 out of 25 Friday and Saturday games. This program is a win-win-win. The school can add a fun family event to their school calendar at no-cost, and in many cases, makes a profit through fundraising. The students gets to hang out with their classmates outside of school, and perform in front of thousands of people, creating a lifelong memory. The team fills seats and creates fans for life. I've found the majority of students that get to perform have never been to a hockey game before, and I've been told by teachers it’s the #1 requested event by returning students every fall.
