🌍 **Reflecting on 29 Years of COP: Progress, Missed Targets, and the Urgency of Now** 🌍 This year marks the 29th anniversary of the Conference of the Parties (COP), which began as a landmark initiative to unite global efforts in combating climate change. The aspirations were clear: **to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, protect biodiversity, and promote sustainable development** to safeguard the planet for future generations. Is it going to be Similar Talks or Have a real deal? Over the years, COP has seen some notable achievements: ✅ *Global Climate Agreements*: The Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement set legally binding targets, holding nations accountable. ✅ *Rising Awareness*: COP has elevated climate discussions to the forefront, driving awareness and commitment from governments, businesses, and individuals worldwide. ✅ *Technological Advancements*: We’ve seen innovations in clean energy, carbon capture, and sustainable practices, with more companies integrating ESG principles. However, we've also faced significant setbacks: ❌ *Emissions Are Still Rising*: Despite commitments, many countries have not met their emissions targets. CO₂ levels and fossil fuel use continue to increase. ❌ *Slow Implementation*: Ambitious pledges often lack the actionable plans or resources needed for real impact, stalling progress. ❌ *Disproportionate Impacts*: Vulnerable populations and ecosystems are experiencing the harshest effects, highlighting the need for more inclusive climate solutions. **Why Now?** The effects of climate change are no longer a distant threat. Rising sea levels, extreme weather, and loss of biodiversity are intensifying, posing immediate risks to economies, communities, and ecosystems. The window to limit global warming to 1.5°C is closing rapidly, making immediate, coordinated action essential. 🌐 *It’s time for governments, businesses, and individuals to shift from pledges to tangible actions*. Integrating sustainable practices, innovating for resilience, and prioritizing our planet’s health are not just aspirations—they’re imperatives. 🌍 The Global Climate Conversation Continues Dubbed the ‘financial COP,’ the latest global COP29 Azerbaijan has just finished. The main takeaway is an agreement that the 23 developed nations would send $300 billion a year by 2035 to help them adapt and combat the consequences of climate change. However, that figure is far below the $1.3 trillion earlier agreed upon.   However, there are reasons to be hopeful. The EU continues to shape sustainable policies across a wide range of sectors, while the UK is keen to lead from the front, with Keir Starmer re-affirming the country’s Net Zero ambitions at Cop29. And with Cop 30 taking place in Belém, Brazil, the next summit should focus on Amazon conservation and biodiversity at the heart of global climate action. Despite the lack of firm action from COP29, there’s no doubt where the conversation is heading. Why not showcase sustainable practices from your neighborhood or your own projects and initiatives and jointly seek ways to replicate and scale them up? While our hearts are with the people in southern and eastern Spain affected by the devastating floods just a few days ago, scientists are telling us that such extreme weather events are exacerbated by climate change and will continue to grow in frequency and intensity as global temperature rises. However, the commitments that national governments have made so far to curb climate change are still insufficient: this year’s synthesis report by the UNFCCC secretariat shows that current national climate plans (NDCs) are still dangerously off-track to avert the crippling effects of climate change. https://lnkd.in/ey97abKW Local action by civil society is crucial to drive governments to raise the level of ambition of their national climate plans or NDCs (nationally determined contribution under the Paris Agreement). By 2025, countries are to update their NDC and raise their level of ambition - the UNFCCC COP 30 in Brazil next year will be the moment of truth. I had the privilege to be part of the civil society organizations present at the UNFCCC #COP21 in Paris back in 2015 when the #Paris Agreement was approved. It was a beautiful historic moment when leaders in government and in the multilateral negotiation process, with strong presence and support from civil society, including sub-national governments, were united in calling for a global agreement on climate. It was the culmination of a long arduous path and work by many people, organizations and governments across the globe… it was magnificent! In the path to #COP30, we need to build this momentum again and more, or we will all loose to the dangerous impacts of climate change.
