Something I don't often have a chance to talk about- my thesis research in emerging technologies and disability studies. I've seen Taiwan's awareness of persons with disabilities grow over the course of my studies and in the years of advocacy that followed graduation. Yes, the stigma remains, but I am confident that efforts that help understand what it's like to live with disabilities is having a positive impact on social structures, with help from physical infrastructures and technologies that create access. Truly appreciate and support this effort from the medical technology sector and AmCham leadership💜 #positivelypurple 💜 https://lnkd.in/g3D3q4Pf
As International Day of Persons with Disabilities (#IDPD2024) approaches on December 3, Boston Scientific Taiwan, in collaboration with the stunning TFC Plaza in Taipei’s Nangang District, is immensely proud to sponsor a “Purple Light Up” initiative. This is our second year of this meaningful collaboration, now joined by the newly-opened Grand Hilai Taipei. At our public lighting ceremony, we heard incredibly moving stories, including from Paralympic bronze medalist Hsiao Hsiang-Wen, who shared his journey of resilience and triumph in the face of adversity. We were also inspired by Chou Shu-Jing, who emphasized the importance of equal rights and inclusive play spaces for children with disabilities, and Pan Wei-Chieh, whose work in adaptive baseball reminds us of the power of teamwork and connection across all abilities. This is more than a symbolic lighting display—it’s a call to action to honor and amplify the voices of persons with disabilities. Wherever you are, you can shine a light on the disabled community, advocating for the respect, dignity, and access they deserve. I’m proud to work for a company that puts values first and embraces #PositivelyPurple as part of our global identity. Let's continue building a more inclusive world, together.

Celebrating International Day for Persons with Disabilities. A Tribute to Resilience and Determination Today, on International Day for Persons with Disabilities, we honor the incredible spirit, resilience, and achievements of millions of individuals worldwide who continue to inspire us with their determination and strength. This day is not just about acknowledging challenges but also celebrating the triumphs and showcasing the limitless potential of persons with disabilities. At Wheelchair Cricket, we witness firsthand the unyielding passion and dedication of athletes who redefine boundaries and challenge stereotypes every single day. These players are more than cricketers—they are warriors, role models, and advocates for inclusivity, showing the world that disability is not inability. Through the game of cricket, we strive to empower and uplift, proving that sports have the power to break barriers, foster unity, and inspire countless others to dream big and aim high. Our athletes represent not only sporting excellence but also the voice of inclusion, equality, and rights for all. Let this day remind us of our collective responsibility to create a world that is accessible and inclusive for everyone. Together, we can build a society where every individual, regardless of ability, has equal opportunities to shine and contribute meaningfully. Join us in celebrating this day by sharing stories of resilience, spreading awareness, and supporting initiatives that make the world a better place for persons with disabilities. #InternationalDayForPersonsWithDisabilities #WheelchairCricket #InclusionMatters #DisabilityIsNotInability #EmpoweringLives #BreakingBarriers #CelebratingAbility

We celebrated International Day of People with Disabilities at Yarra Trams with a panel discussion featuring members from our Accessibility Reference Group, sharing stories from their lives and how we can all contribute to accessibility and inclusion. Yarra Trams’ Accessibility Reference Group is vital to ensuring the work we do has a real impact for people with disabilities, providing valuable feedback for initiatives to help improve accessibility across the tram network. As part of today’s celebration, we also launched our new Accessibility Action Plan 2024-2027. The plan outlines how we’ll work to make our tram network more inclusive for passengers of all abilities – with more training for frontline staff, events like Try Before You Ride and Get Back on Board to help passengers feel more confident travelling and providing more job opportunities for people with disabilities. International Day of Persons with Disabilities – An event in celebration of the International Day of Persons with disabilities is conducted by most companies in India. So, on this day I am in great demand as it were. Everybody would like me to do a session for them on December 3 and for free. It checks their box and I understand the economics of it. Online sessions for half an hour to say that they also conducted a session seems to be enough for most companies. Very few companies are willing to go the extra mile and sincerely try to make a change and not just do it for the optics of it. I had the good fortune of being with Siemens Healthineers, who not only ensured that they had a real event, but have also made a true commitment to fulfill the theme of this year, which is "Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities For an Inclusive and Sustainable Future" by supporting my efforts to improve the quality-of-life of persons facing a lifetime of paralysis after spinal cord injury through Soulfree (www.soulfree.org) I wonder how other companies justify to themselves the use of Persons with disability to do free sessions for them and then just leaving it at that. I understand that the corporate world has to be cut throat. However, I'm thankful that I remain naïve enough to hope that at least for the long-term vitality and welfare of their own staff culture at least some companies will consider becoming truly inclusive and diverse. Even if the bottomline is the only valid criteria, I have no doubt in my mind that Persons with Disabilities (PWD) can and will be an asset to any company. I sincerely ask companies across the country to truly try and amplify the leadership of Persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future by enabling us to fulfill our highest potential – to invest in long-term gain instead of looking at short-term expenses or losses. Thank you!

Tomorrow, December 3, is International Day of Persons with Disabilities. I've written about this day on MySeveralWorlds.com for many years in Taiwan and rarely see it mentioned anywhere. I continue to celebrate it and write about it as the topic is finally starting to grow despite the fact that I've been in a wheelchair since 2009. Tomorrow I will be releasing some disability stats that showcase what is happening with #DisabilityAwareness in #Taiwan. I hope you will join me in sharing and helping to educate others. Taiwan still has a long way to go with #DisabilityRights, especially in terms of making workplaces and public amenities accessible. It might surprise you, but Taiwan is still way behind on these issues, although in the past few years I've started to see more people talking about it. (I'm encouraged... finally, but I'm still waiting to rejoin the land of living.) 2024's theme is “Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable "International Day of Persons with Disabilities encourages an understanding of disability issues; the rights of persons with disabilities; and gains derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of the political, social, economic and cultural life of their communities. A disability is a condition or function judged to be significantly impaired relative to the usual standard of an individual of their group. The term is often used to refer to individual functioning, including physical, sensory, cognitive and intellectual impairment, mental illness, and various types of chronic disease." ~Source: UN.Org

Today is International Day of Persons with Disabilities... I want to ask you to think about how accessible your organisation, workplace or service is? How is accessibility measured & who by? If I was coming to meet with you today, would I need to provide advance notice that I'm a wheelchair user? Would I be able to use the front door? ... or am I to go round the side by the bins...can I get in at all? I have to think about accessibility constantly. How I go about my everyday does not include much spontaneity, and whilst having the facility to meet online is great there is nothing quite like connecting in person. So my ask for this day is that we learn about disability, think about accessibility and work in co-production with disabled people to make the changes that will make the difference...If we are designing, developing, delivering, what does that look like for disabled people in all our incredible diversity.
