Public Health vs Private Health: My Perspective
I recently overheard a discussion among some students about the differences between public health and private health, which prompted me to reflect on my own understanding of these two concepts.
In this write-up, I will share my perspective on the distinctions between public health and private health, and why I believe it is essential to understand both.
✨Public Health: The Population Approach
Public health initiatives focus on preventing disease and promoting health at the POPULATION LEVEL. By understanding how public health works, you can tap into resources like vaccination programs, health education campaigns, and environmental health regulations to protect yourself and your community.
✨Private Health: A The Personalized Approach
Private health, on the other hand, focuses on INDIVIDUALISED medical care. By understanding how private health works, you can make informed decisions about your treatment options, take ownership of your health data, and advocate for personalized care that meets your unique needs.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
▫️Prioritize prevention by staying informed about public health initiatives and taking advantage of resources available to you.
▫️Take ownership of your health by understanding your treatment options and advocating for personalized care.
▫️Recognize the importance of both public health and private health in maintaining a healthy society.
Remember, your health is in your hands – take control and make informed decisions to live your healthiest life!

There were so many highlights from my Masters of Healthcare Innovation (MHCI) experience at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, and a couple of learnings continue to stand out.
Roy Rosin and Sarah Rottenberg helped our class understand that innovation was about capturing value from new ideas (distinct from creativity & invention)...and the importance of falling in love with the problem. Zeke Emanuel and Kevin Volpp emphasized that patients/members are not rational, so concepts like status quo bias and choice architecture truly impact how they make decisions and change (or don't change) behaviors. Kevin Ahmaad Jenkins, Ph.D. and Kimberly T. Arnold, PhD, MPH highlighted inequities in chronic condition management and preventive screening by Race, Ethnicity, Language, Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and other factors.
Patient and member education is not a new concept. But unfortunately, patients and members struggle to access it. When they are able to access it, the status quo is confusing and erodes trust (paper print-outs with confusing clinical terminology). This is sending people to Dr. Google, Tik Tok, and Instagram, and it's winning.
Patient education and health literacy are the tip of the spear. If we can't make dramatic headways on these disciplines, how can we expect to improve outcomes in Diabetes, Hypertension, Cancer Screenings, and other high cost drivers where we see low engagement and inequities?
I'm so proud to work with Lisa K. Fitzpatrick MD, MPH, MPA, Neal Sikka and Grapevine Health, which combines all of these learnings with a focus on health information and education for Medicaid, Black, and Spanish-speaking audiences.
1. Grapevine Health provides a licensable content library of health information and education videos that are designed to be relatable and easy-to-understand about health, chronic condition management, and navigating the healthcare system to improve trust and health literacy.
2. Grapevine can also come to your community and design, film, and produce videos about health topics important to the populations you serve (starring your members/patients, physicians, and community-based organizations).
3. And BECAUSE it can be so difficult to get this information out to patients and members, Grapevine also offers an SMS engagement platform to distribute this health education.
If you're looking for a new and novel approach for improving chronic condition management, reduce unnecessary utilization, reducing inequities, closing gaps in quality performance, delivering a better experience for your patients and members, and improving health literacy amongst underserved populations, reach out.
Let's talk.

#World_Pharmacists_Day
World Pharmacists Day is celebrated annually on September 25th to recognize the contributions of pharmacists to global health. Pharmacists play a crucial role in ensuring the safe and effective use of medications. They provide essential services such as dispensing prescriptions, offering medication counseling, and promoting public health.
On this day, organizations and individuals around the world come together to raise awareness about the importance of pharmacy and the work of pharmacists. Events and activities may include:
* Community outreach programs: Pharmacists may participate in health fairs, providing free health screenings and education.
* Educational campaigns: Pharmacists can share information about proper medication use and the importance of adherence to treatment plans.
* Advocacy efforts: Pharmacists may advocate for policies that support patient care and improve access to medications.
By celebrating World Pharmacists Day, we acknowledge the vital role that pharmacists play in our healthcare system and express our gratitude for their dedication to improving the health and well-being of their communities.

3D Healthcare 💙 Effective and Sustainable Workflow Improvement in Care Delivery ♦ C-suites: Eliminate the Need for More Cost Cutting ♦ 3D Train the Trainer Certification Program ♦ A Loving Organization Culture Change
It's rare I watch or listen to a podcast and am inspired. Remembering the word, "inspire" comes from the root, "in spirit", we can say my inspiration has its roots in love, which is exactly what this podcast speaks to: Love as a guiding principle in the leadership, management, and delivery of excellent healthcare.
Apurv Gupta, MD, MPH, Stephanie Feals and guest, Erik Anderson of Adventist Health Castle go deep into the practical application of love in creating the excellence in healthcare delivery that wins a National Baldrige Award.
But it's so much more than winning this prestigious award. It's about the love that brings together leadership, staff, patients, families and community. Together we're better, yes?
The powerful principles that are the foundation of a great organization must now include love. For Adventist Health Castle: Love Matters. For Dr. Gupta and Premier Inc.: A Loving Organization. For 3DHealthcare: Loving Systems.
I so love and respect the many kindred spirits who are working so hard to make healthcare better. Having said that, isn't it time, as the song says, to give love a chance.
If not now, when? If not us, who?

@erik-anderson-601a8591/, Patient Care Executive at Adventist Health, says from the moment he joined the organization he knew it felt different. He said he felt the sense of Aloha.
Treating patients and employees like Ohana - or family - is in their DNA. Erik told us that like with any family, there needs to be trust, transparency, and sometimes even tough love for accountability, which is a two-way street.
The team at Adventist Health Castle listens to the community and deeply values that feedback when choosing how to best serve their patients and teams. Their holistic approach includes community-centered events like Christmas tree lightings, speaking to students, and other ways that encourage the community to become a partner in their healthcare.
Their commitment to clinical excellence combined with their “Love Matters” campaign lead them to a Baldrige Award win in 2017.

"Fostering Peace as a Prerequisite for Equitable Health" is the theme for World Federation of Public Health Associations' #GlobalPublicHealthWeek. Peace and stability are essential to achieving equitable health outcomes for populations.
When there is peace and stability people can access #Healthcare facilities without fear or disruption. The hospitals, clinics, and medical supply chains, which are vital for delivering quality healthcare services can be developed and maintained, and the underlying social determinants of health, such as poverty, inequality, and lack of education can be addressed.
