This is the direction news coverage on the homeless crisis should take today: focusing on solutions, highlighting what’s working, and showcasing not only on the companies driving these initiatives, but also recognizing the role of frontline workers who directly engage with individuals, build trust, and provide hands-on support bringing solutions to life. We must learn from successful models, tailoring them to meet the specific needs of diverse communities. In doing so it is these case managers who bridge the gap between policy and human impact, ensuring that funding translates into real change for the people who need it most. As a community member, you have the power to influence change and end the stigma by making your voice heard in support of those experienceing the homeless crisis and the workers devoted to creating a path to housing.
Breaking: PATH was featured in The New York Times! 📰 In an in-depth report by Jill Cowan, PATH shares a closer look into the work of our frontline case managers. We’re proud to partner with Mayor Karen Bass on her Inside Safe Initiative, working together to bring our unhoused neighbors indoors, provide them the support they need, and work towards long-term housing. Home is more than a roof over your head - it's the foundation for everything in our lives. When we’re tired, home is where we can find comfort and rest. In times of hardship, it’s somewhere we can seek refuge. Home is somewhere we can feel fully comfortable to be ourselves. It’s somewhere safe, secure and stable. Sleeping on a friend’s sofa or living in cramped temporary accommodation with nowhere to cook or wash your clothes is not a substitute for a home. When everyday tasks are a challenge and you don’t know where you’ll be living next, you can’t build a stable life. Let’s decide something now: all of us should have a safe and stable home. So join us and sign our open letter demanding political leaders commit to ending all forms of homelessness. https://bit.ly/48xMOJ0

Gov. Wes Moore, sadly, another young person lost and another family and school traumatized by senseless violence. Also, sadly, a post I wrote just a day ago became outdated before sunset. I wrote about the 45th school shooting of the year, and now Maryland is home to the 46th. Most won’t read my post but I am hoping that you will. In it, there’s solution. As veterans, we know that “thoughts and prayers” is not a strategic plan. Neither is hardening of schools a complete plan. That’s a defensive tactic that only addresses the back end of the issue, not the root cause. We need a strategy that will stop these incidents from happening in the first place. That strategy, developed by a team of Marylanders, is outlined in the link and we already have proof that it works to stop violence before it happens. Our work was recognized and supported by Rep Elijah Cummings, Rep Debbie Dingle, and other members of Congress, & was honored by President Biden. It’s time that we spread the L.O.V.E. Is The Answer principles throughout our K-12 schools. Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) https://lnkd.in/eZ9-vRSW
The First Lady and I are heartbroken for the Joppatowne community as we grieve the loss of a life cut short. Maryland prays for the young victim of this senseless act, Warren Curtis Grant – as well as his family, friends, teachers, mentors, and loved ones. My full statement:

Today we mark the anniversary of the 2008 formal apology to Australia’s Stolen Generations who were forcibly removed from their families and communities when they were children, through race-based policies set up by both State and Federal Governments in 1910 and continued as recently as the 1970s. We recognise the trauma experienced and ongoing for the Stolen Generations survivors and acknowledge all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were separated from family, community and culture. Through hearing their stories, and ongoing deep listening, we hope to join in on the healing journey and to be part of the solution into the future. Last year we launched our second Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). The RAP outlines 27 actions with 109 corresponding deliverables that inform and improve our practice. These deliverables were developed from consultations held across the country including truth-telling with Aboriginal Elders. We continue our deep listening so together we can support better outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, young people, communities, and families.
