Is your salt intake too high? Almost all populations are consuming too much sodium according to the World Health Organization and its recommendation for adults of less than 2000 mg/day sodium (equivalent to < 5 g/day salt). Reducing salt in foods can result in extra salt ultimately being added in copious amounts on the plate. Solving this issue highlights the importance of innovative projects like Shift-Salt by Wageningen University and Research. You have most probably heard of "bioavailability" Bioavailability is basically how much of what you take (like a drug or a vitamin) actually gets absorbed into your bloodstream and can do its job. When you swallow a pill, it doesn’t just go straight into your blood. It has to survive the harsh environment of your stomach, get absorbed by your intestines, and sometimes even get past the liver which can break it down first. All these steps can lower how much of the drug or nutrient actually ends up in your system. So, in a nutshell, bioavailability is all about how well and how much of what you ingest is used by your body. This is where the quality of your drinking water comes into play. Water that is very low (or absent of) any impurities, including minerals can optimally fulfil its task as a solvent in which solutes such as salts, proteins, and nutrients dissolve. Its capacity to dissolve these components is directly connected to the fact that the water itself is pure. The purer it is, the higher the capacity for transportation. Water that is already "full" with contaminants or minerals has a much lower transport capacity because its "transport seats" are already occupied. In my next post I will tell you how this fact has manifested in my own body since I am drinking pure and structured water. #nourishyourself #vitaminsandminerals #micronutrients #betterhealth #healthfirst #healthtip
