Today is International Autism Awareness Day. It is no different to any other day of the year in terms of the day-to-day demands of living with autism or parenting a child with autism. Every year that I read about awareness reminds me of the continued need for a push on from awareness towards acceptance and ultimately empowerment. Massive thanks and respect are due to educators, therapists, family and friends for everything they do, the support they provide and their inspiration. For greater acceptance and empowerment, we need education systems that are more flexible and accommodating and focus on ensuring a future for those not ideally suited to a classical academic education that allows them to excel in meaningful working environments. And naturally workplaces that are inclusive and provide them with the necessary acceptance and support. https://lnkd.in/dAEQiQyN #viennafamilynetwork #acceptance #empowerment

As an autism specialist deeply involved in conducting workshops across organizations, schools, and with families, I have firsthand experience with the diverse behaviors exhibited by children on the autism spectrum. I understand the complexities that arise when using the word "no" or attempting to remove something that a child is obsessing over. These situations can be particularly challenging, often triggering intense reactions or meltdowns. Autism education in schools is not just beneficial; it is essential. Many educators and staff may not fully understand the nuances of connecting with a student who is in the midst of a meltdown or tantrum. Without proper training, attempts to manage these situations can inadvertently escalate the behavior, leading to more distress for the child and disruption in the classroom. By providing targeted training and support, we can equip educators with the tools and strategies needed to effectively respond to these situations, fostering a more inclusive and supportive learning environment. This not only benefits the student with autism but also enhances the overall classroom dynamic, promoting understanding and empathy among educators. https://lnkd.in/g5vzR8D4
