Connecticut IB Academy is the #1 high school in Connecticut, according to US News and World Report's annual rankings. Schools are ranked on their test performances, graduation rates and how well they prepare students for college. #EHPSPride

This recent report by the IB showed that University outcomes (enrollment, offers from more selective universities, staying enrolled) for IBCP students in the USA are on average above those of regular high school graduates. There is no comparison to Diploma students, but our first graduating cohort of IBCP students here at UWC Maastricht were given offers at many of the great institutions that our Diploma students are attending, often with very generous financial assistance from the UWC Davis Scholars programme. Hopefully news like this goes some way to dispelling the uncertainty that many of our UWC students feel when choosing whether to select the IB Career-related Programme.

Three-year (90 credit) bachelor's degrees? That's what's starting at some four-year colleges in Idaho next month (approved by regional accreditor NWCCU). Naturally, many area colleges were in a tizzy at the idea. I see both sides. LET'S TALK ABOUT THE IB BOARD AND COLLEGE ADMISSIONS. This is a question on everyone's minds when I speak to parents and prospective students. In the US, while specific cutoff scores aren't published, aiming for a mix of #sixes and #sevens across your subjects is key for #Ivy League and #elite university applications. A score in the #40s enhances competitiveness, with #38 or higher still considered strong. For #UCLA, a minimum of five points in each# HL course is required, often with accepted students scoring #38 or above. Across the pond, #UK universities like #Oxford and #Cambridge set high standards, requiring #38 to #40 points with specific #HL subject scores for competitive courses. GCSE students in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland will soon receive their results, but how does the grading system work in England? GCSEs in England now use a numerical system from 9 to 1, replacing the old A* to E grading. This was introduced in 2014, with full implementation by 2020. The highest grade is 9, while 1 is the lowest with U remaining ungraded. Grade boundaries, set annually by examiners, determine the minimum marks needed for each grade. A 4 is considered a standard pass, while a 5 is a strong pass. Many sixth forms require a minimum number of 5s or 6s for further study. The shift to numerical grades was aimed at making GCSEs more challenging and transparent, with a focus on final exams rather than coursework. Additionally, it allows for clearer differentiation among high-achieving students. But did these changes achieve its goals? The tides are turning back towards standardized testing for college admissions: today, Yale University announced it is requiring test scores again, following similar announcements from Dartmouth College and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In fact, colleges are now acknowledging that the lack of required test scores has disadvantaged admissions decisions for students from under-resourced schools. The announcement detailed how applicants from these schools often have access to only a few advanced courses and tend to receive more generic recommendations due to large class sizes. Interestingly, they are accepting a wider range of tests including APs and IBs instead of just the SAT or ACT. The Dean of Undergraduate Admissions noted, "Students with higher scores have been more likely to have higher Yale G.P.A.s, and test scores are the single greatest predictor of a student’s performance in Yale courses in every model we have constructed." I'm curious to see the decisions other selective colleges will make in the coming months. Obviously, it's still important that schools consider an application holistically, and test scores merely help to complete the picture.
