✍️'Specialist colleges somehow appear to have been drawn into the definition of “private school”' Forcing specialist colleges to charge local authorities VAT is wasteful and will divert resources from teaching the most vulnerable, writes Clare Howard OBE https://lnkd.in/eyNWnimr

The IFS have said their own figures may not be correct and other more recent analysis certainly suggests the exodus from the Independent sector could be significantly higher which will result in a significant cost to the tax payer and Labour failing to meet their manifesto pledges on education. Even if it is not immediate due to parents wishing to see their commitment through, the numbers coming to Independent schools will almost certainly decline. I note Bridget Phillipson’s observation about an increase of pupils in the independent sector. It is true the numbers have gone up marginally but as a proportion of children going into education the numbers in the state sector have increased by 6% over the last 10 years whilst the independent sector has only increased by 1.7% so there is a clear decline in the market share. Just this year there has actually been a decline of 2.7% in the independent sector costing the tax payer an additional £22 million. Bridget Phillipson didn’t even know how many children are in Independent schools. Being off by over 10% is not good and if they are happy to round numbers up or down by those sums that should speak volumes. Sadly, we may be walking into a scenario akin to Greece and Australia. #VAT #independenteducation #educationnottaxation #schools HeadteacherChat Independent Schools Council Independent Schools' Bursars Association Independent School Management The Times The Daily Telegraph Christine Cunniffe Irfan H Latif FRSA Silas Edmonds Guy Ayling Michelle Catterson Susan Hannam LBC Radio London Broadcast TV & Radio Studio

Anyone else catch this interview with Bridget Phillipson this morning? The main takeaway… ‘the number of children who will be affected by Labour’s private school VAT plan will be negligible’. Let us know your thoughts. We can probably guess but would love to hear what you’d reply if you had the opportunity to speak to her directly. Independent schools in the UK Following on from the exceptional interest in my two posts last week on the topic of VAT on independent school fees, it’s fantastic to read such a passionate and clear-sighted article on the topic from Nicky Hardy, Deputy Head at Leighton Park School. One of the many unhelpful assumptions apparently behind the UK Government’s decision to impose VAT on independent school fees is the concept that independent schools perpetuate societal divisions and retrogressive ways of doing things. The case of the Quaker independent schools, of which Leighton Park School in Reading is one, provides fascinating evidence to the contrary. These Quaker schools have been a beacon of inclusive, diverse thinking and practice for many years, with progressive practice in mindfulness, wellbeing, student voice, student rights, learning support, LGBTQ+ rights, religious tolerance and a deep-seated, radical inclusivity against which against contemporary virtue-signalling and fashionable causes can be measured. A particular irony in the case of Leighton Park School in relation to the VAT policy is that it was the alma mater of Michael Foot, 1980s Labour Party leader, writer and scholar. The school’s astonishing line-up of distinguished alumni - which includes the film director David Lean and the musician Laura Marling, amongst many others - is tribute to the enduring impact of our country’s independent school sector. Let’s celebrate and cherish the liberal, inclusive, progressive spirit wherever it is found in UK schools, state and independent! Legislation introduced today in the King's speech proposes the removal of VAT exemption for independent schools. But has this move been thoroughly considered? An estimated 200,000 pupils could potentially exit the sector, seeking places in the state sector. With classrooms already bursting at the seams, is the state sector adequately equipped to accommodate this influx? #Education #Legislation #VAT #IndependentSchools
