🚀 Webinar Release: Towards a Regional, Rural, and Remote Jobs and Skills Roadmap Interim Report 🚀
I’m excited to share the webinar released today, which dives into the Interim Report for the Regional, Rural, and Remote Jobs and Skills Roadmap, chaired by Peter Dawkins. The discussion brought together thought leaders, including Barney Glover, Liz Ritchie, and Kirsty Leslie, who highlighted key opportunities and challenges for regional NSW and beyond.
When you read through the Interim Report and watch this webinar, you can truly see the story the data tells, alongside the anecdotal stories from people experiencing these issues firsthand. In my role with the Country Universities Centre Parkes, I hear and see these challenges play out in our community. This report provides the data to back up what we witness every day, reinforcing the urgent need for targeted solutions in regional NSW.
For regional NSW, the report paints a clear picture:
🔹 Skill shortages remain a significant challenge, particularly in health care, aged care, and skilled trades.
🔹 Workforce gaps in regional areas are often more acute, with sectors like healthcare and early education struggling to attract and retain workers.
🔹 The importance of investing in local Vocational Education and Training (VET) to meet the needs of the future workforce and regional economic development is clear. By expanding funding for TAFE and RTOs, we can build the skills our regions desperately need to thrive.
The panel also underscored the vital role of the Regional Universities Study Hub (RUSH) network in supporting rural students to succeed in higher education and VET, helping to bridge these gaps in skills and workforce demand.
Watch the full webinar below for more insights into how we can all play a role in ensuring our regions are ready for the future! 🌱👩🏫👨🔧

The Results of D8 Summit in Cairo
The D8 Summit in Cairo is expected to have significant economic and political consequences. The summit's theme, "Investing in Youth and Supporting Small and Medium Enterprises: Shaping Tomorrow's Economy," highlights the focus on empowering youth and promoting SMEs as drivers of economic growth and innovation.
Economically, the summit aims to enhance trade relations, attract investments, and develop joint initiatives to support youth and SMEs. This could lead to increased economic cooperation among member states, potentially boosting trade volumes and investments. For instance, trade volume between Egypt and D-8 countries has already risen to $7.9 billion in the first 10 months of 2024.
Politically, the summit provides a platform for member states to discuss pressing global issues, such as conflicts, economic protectionism, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Egyptian President Abdelfattah Al-Sisi emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation among developing nations to tackle international challenges ². The summit also includes a special session on Palestine and Lebanon, acknowledging the severe challenges faced by developing nations.
Some key areas of focus for the summit include:
