Open-source AI is in jeopardy. At fal, we believe in the power of open-source and collaboration to drive progress in tech. Most of the innovation in this wave of AI is thanks to open-source projects. You don't have to go too far to see this. Just look at Meta's Llama, Mistral AI, Stability AI's Stable Diffusion, LangChain or Georgi Gerganov's GGML. We owe this wave to these projects. Today, we are announcing fal Research Grants which provides free compute resources to researchers and developers working on cutting-edge open source initiatives. But in the last 6 months that we spent on hacking on open-source models, we realized something important: With a humble amount of compute, you can build amazing models. And this is why we decided to launch this program to support researchers building open-source models. If you've seen LinkedIn or the news in the past few days, you probably saw how the world is going crazy about the latest AI model from DeepSeek. In plain language, here's what happened and what it means for all of us: 1. American dominance in AI has been severely hit A lab in China called DeepSeek released an AI model, R1, that outperforms OpenAI's most advanced model, o1. This alone is big news, given that the US has been sanctioning China in fear of exactly this happening, depriving companies of access to advanced hardware. But it gets more interesting. 2. Privacy and security has been firmly reinstated One of the critical barriers to AI usage has been security concerns, as companies have to trust AI models that operate on outside servers with high-risk data. DeepSeek did the unthinkable and made this most powerful model 𝒐𝒑𝒆𝒏-𝒔𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒄𝒆, enabling companies to self-host, thereby securing their data and complying with differing regional laws. 3. Profitability with AI is now a 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑙 possibility While OpenAI has raised almost $18 billion over 10 investment rounds, spending more than $6 billion so far on training and infrastructure, DeepSeek spent a meagre $𝟓.𝟔 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 to develop R1. Not only that, the model blows OpenAI out of the water on efficiency, being 95% more cost efficient AND 91% more resource efficient! This is a textbook example of Moore's law, and marks a shift in AI accessibility and profitability—opening the gates for lower budget players like 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐩𝐬 to join the race. 4. Innovative breakthroughs are the name of the game At the core of DeepSeek's success has been their ability to leverage limited resources with creativity. They adopted Reinforcement Learning to train the R1 model, bypassing the need for enormous, expensive, human-labeled datasets and using synthetic data instead. Now, they're making the model opensource, inviting collective intelligence to carry this innovation forward—a genius move! -- This is a turning point in AI development, one that reminds me of Linux. I expect the parallel to only deepen, and we will see AI models becoming more versatile, more accessible, soon. How do you see this development? Despite job rejections, his tenacity led to the creation of Omniplex , a powerful AI tool that's gaining traction. Saha has made Omniplex open-source, sharing his code with the world. In conversation with AIM, he stated that I built the Omniplex prototype in one weekend. It was just a single-page app, but it started gaining interest after I shared on Reddit. I’m not asking for any money. The source code is openly available,” he stated. His commitment to open-source reflects a broader vision of democratising AI. Omniplex is built using the Vercel AI SDK, Firebase, NextJs, and Bing, and currently runs on OpenAI’s GPT model. Mars5 TTS: Introducing Mars5 Text-to-Speech, a system offering exceptional prosody control and voice cloning capabilities. 3. Meta LLM Compiler: Meta has released an LLM Compiler that surpasses GPT-4 in code optimization and compiler reasoning tasks. 4. Arcee-Spark: The Qwen2 7B model, further fine-tuned under the name Arcee-Spark, has outperformed GPT-3.5 on the MT Bench. 5. Gemini Nano: Now available in Chrome, Gemini Nano is an on-device LLM that operates fully offline with just two lines of code. 6. Fal’s Super-Resolution Model: Fal has released a fully open-source GAN-based super-resolution model, with a second version already in development. 7. The last 2 weeks we were flooded with posts about DeepSeek. I am not writing about DS, but it is related, I cant escape 😀 This article is excellent to sharp your skills as an engineer. Linus Torvalds conveys a healthy dose of skepticism that many of us have about AI. There is so much money being thrown at AI and the resulting market caps are arguably overblown. AI isn’t going to drastically change everything in our world, at least not in the short run. As many of us who have built AI systems, tools and applications know, the details of collecting, cleaning and configuring usable data sets, building, training and refining algorithms and models and then aligning results into a market viable product that carries intrinsic value is supremely difficult. But I am not as pessimistic as Linus. The success of the high profile LLM’s have shown many people the potential capability of AI and empowered with these tools, they will create unique value that only free democracies can achieve. Private companies and researchers across the market are creating focused industry applications outside of the LLM’s. These are generating small successes that are gaining traction and will create ever increasing impact that cannot yet perceived. #AI #LLM

Linus Torvalds, the creator and lead developer of the Linux kernel, “grimaced as he summarized the state of the AI biz as 90% marketing and 10% reality” while speaking at the Open-Source Summit in Vienna. During the interview, “Torvalds attempted to see the potential in AI, but relentless industry #hype is taking its toll. I think AI is really interesting, and I think it is going to change the world. And, at the same time, I hate the hype cycle so much that I really don’t want to go there.” Many of us feel the same way. We see the potential but don’t believe it’s worth the $10 trillion in additional market capitalization for the magnificent seven (Apple, Amazon, Meta, Google, Microsoft, Tesla, Nvidia) since January 2023. “The Linux pioneer outlined his AI hype coping mechanism: ‘So my approach to AI right now is I will basically ignore it because I think the whole tech industry around AI is in a very bad position (grimaces)...” The interviewer’s interpretation: “there is almost too much AI BS around for the Fin to tolerate, and it is currently 90% marketing and 10% reality. That’s quite a ratio.” So, the added market capitalization since January 2023 should only be $1 trillion, and not $10 trillion? And the bubble will soon burst, perhaps when quarterly earnings are announced at the end of this week? “On a more positive note, Torvalds reckons there is change afoot: In five years, things will change, and at that point we’ll see what AI is getting used every day for real workloads.” Five years? The $10 trillion of additional market cap assumes the benefits will come this year. “This isn’t the first instance of an IT industry heavyweight asking about the validity of the AI industry. Just a week ago, we reported on the CEO of Baidu voicing an even more pessimistic opinion – that the AI bubble would burst and that just 1% of companies would continue to pick up the pieces after the predicted pop.” “The Linux godfather ended the highlighted video segment by mentioning what he believes to be the current strengths of #AI. “Chat GPT makes great demonstrations (rubs forehead), and it's obviously being used in many areas, but especially in graphic design, things like that.” I agree. The videos are amazing and the cost of making video advertisements will fall, as will the cost of making YouTube videos. In conclusion: “Sadly, it is challenging to be a tech enthusiast and ignore pervasive trends in the industry, which often can frustrate as they seem to be marketing bandwagon-led. However, individuals are probably best advised to follow in Torvalds’ footsteps and “basically ignore” things they don’t like, concentrating instead on the abundant enthralling aspects and potential modern #technology delivers.” My book hit the stores last week. Dr. Jeffrey Funk and Sing Koo, I'm an adult college graduate predisposed to/passionate about technology sales (B2B SaaS). When I reread that a "hype bubble" is about to burst, the psychological aspect to sales reappears. The modern common refrain is: "sell the problem, don't sell the solution." Therefore I must ask, have either of you ever miscalculated some process -- be it the #cups of rice you put in the cooker or the ideal route to return to a favorite landmark? What was the proximate decision with which you addressed that miscalculation? Did you reverse the vehicle or even remove the excess cups of rice? They say that a good or commodity's "fair" price is however much the general public is willing to pay -- provided they maintain the relationship such that it wasn't a one-off transaction. So... why do so many intelligent, adult, men not only believe but choose to reiterate that other rich and powerful men, who are also self-aware, and who invest *for a living* won't patiently obfuscate for the next five(5) years as LINUS TORVALDS has himself conceded it will take before the hype becomes robust business use cases, instead of *reflexively* capitulating to having miscalculated and thereby destroy the value of $10 Trillion?!

Taking a quantified view on (possibly) unjustified valuations is interesting. Why not short some choice #AI stocks? Timing is all with shorting, but if the anti-hypers are correct, they could also be rich(er). You could, for example choose #NVIDIA. Here the short interest is much higher than earlier in the year, but level, and not particularly high from a cover perspective. https://lnkd.in/ex7BRjSM However, I suspect that any punishment magnificent seven stocks receive this week will be for selective failure not to be fully in on the hype (if it's hype). #alphabet reports today. #Microsoft and #Meta on Wednesday. Take your pick. Long or short?

Very interesting interview. A few observations: * Linus Torvalds laid the foundations for the modern operating system, finding the right combination of technology and accessibility to make Linux the most pervasive operating system on the planet. Ignore him at your peril. * He's generally unimpressed with the notion that current AI will form a new operating system, which he sees as being far more complex than AI by itself can currently handle. This doesn't mean that there is no place for AI - it has definite use cases, something I don't think anyone would disagree with, but that those use cases will not be worth the $10 trillion or more being invested in the tech (maybe not worth $1 trillion, even over the next several decades). * Finally, he states (and I agree) that the most interesting AI cases are truly generative in nature - media and video production being the most obvious. I think that most people underestimate the impact that this sector will have because they dismiss it as not being business oriented and "toys". This is a very real myopia - much like people dismissing comic books and video games, despite it now driving a multi-trillion dollar industry.
