Retail Rockstar Ready to Rise Above Challenges Being a retail assistant is all about building relationships, helping customers find what they need, and going the extra mile to create a positive shopping experience. But let's be honest, it's not always sunshine and rainbows. There can be some hurdles to overcome. Here are a few challenges retail assistants face, and how I'm prepared to tackle them: * Difficult Customers: Not every customer is a breeze to deal with. I'll stay calm, listen attentively, and diffuse any tense situations with professionalism and empathy. * Product Knowledge: Keeping up with inventory and new arrivals can be a challenge. I'm a fast learner and will actively seek out product knowledge to become a reliable source of information for customers. * Long Hours & Weekends: Retail schedules can be demanding. I'm a team player and understand the importance of flexibility to ensure smooth store operations. Beyond the Challenges: Despite these hurdles, there's so much to love about retail! I'm passionate about exceeding expectations and creating a positive environment for both customers and colleagues. Retail is a fantastic place to develop strong communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills – all valuable assets in any career path. #retaillife #customerservice #retailchallenge #retailassistant #alwayslearning

Retail is not for everyone… Even though it’s considered to be an easy start for those who lack experience or skills. Many of us started as a part-timers while finishing our studies before getting the “real job”. But somehow we got drawn into this never ending flow of customers, Black Fridays, promos and Super Sales, mad times with colleagues, crazy experiences with customers - whatever was it, but few of us actually stayed and chose to build a career in retail. And believe me that’s not an easy one! Put aside fun and jokes, it is only cover up for the pressure you’ll be dealing with on a daily basis. Customers are not always fun, in most cases you will be dealing with demanding, irritated, frustrated people and it’s your job to find a way to make them feel better. Because at the end of the day it’s not only about making sales, it’s “customer satisfaction” what actually makes them coming back to you. Aside from mastering people skills and being (or acting) friendly all day long you will still have to run the show. Those people who never worked in retail store might not realize that we are performing the same administrative tasks they do in offices, but we always have to do it on the go, without the luxury of having “own desk and comfy chair”. Preparing reports, analysing data, scheduling and planning, creating trainings, addressing IT and maintenance issues - those just a few things store managers are responsible for. And it has to be done quick before store gets busy. Being in retail for so many years has taught a lot about human nature, I aquired skills like multitasking, manpower utilization, planning, data analysis and so much more. Retail job if taken seriously could be an excellent school of life and potentially lucrative career path. But only if you can handle it 🤣 All I wanted to say retail is not for weak people. If you managed to survive and thrive for few years you already did something most people are not capable of. So don’t let anyone make you think that it’s not a “real job”. It is as real as you take it! #retail

Things I stopped buying since I left my full-time retail management job $$$ - Coffee at Starbucks ($5/cup * 5 days/week = $1,200/year) - Spinach feta wrap or sandwich ($4 * 5 days/week = $960/year) - Lunch at Panda Express or Tokyo Joe’s ($15 * 5 = $3,600/year) - Cloths from new collections with employee discount ($200/month = $2,400/year) - New makeup at Sephora ($100/month = $1,200/year) - Gas to get to work ($30/week = $1,440/year) - Vehicle maintenance ($50/month = $600/year) - Car insurance ($50/month = $600/year) Total: $12,000/year. Out of site, out of mind. Working from home decreases my desire to shop exponentially. Now, instead of eating out and shopping, I can max out my IRA. It’s also better for the environment. We need to rethink the validity of the WORK — CONSUME — WORK cycle. It doesn’t serve us as people and it doesn’t serve the planet at large. It only serves big corporations. P.S. Photo from Seattle's Pike's Peak. For some reason, I liked the pig so much it's the only photo of me from that trip lol.

I Help Retail Managers Secure New and Exciting Careers With Better Work-Life Balance and Job Satisfaction Without Having to Take a Salary Cut Learn More at retailescape.team 👈
Lead areas in Retail... When you become so good at something you are given more work! Often disguised as a "development opportunity". If you were given one for customer service - it was like the kiss of death. Your results would often fall off a cliff shortly after! And if you were the lead for audits, license to trade, health and safety etc. You'd be the busiest! It wouldn't matter if you hated your lead area. It would be yours to keep for at least a year. Hands up who's got a lead area right now? My last one as a Store Manager was bakery availability, joy! So what's this got to do with changing careers you ask? Well, if you weren't good at "something". You'd go spend time with one of the experts with a lead area in that "something". Yet those seeking a career change from Retail rarely do this for themselves. If you are struggling to secure interviews for jobs in other industries. Why not speak to people who have already done just that and ask them how they did it? Here's how to do it in 5 easy steps... - Search for [Desired Job Title] in the LinkedIn search bar (for example practice manager healthcare) - Select the "People" filter. - Go to All filters and go to "Past Companies", click "+ Add a company" Add loads of similar retail companies from your country (e.g Sainsbury's, Tesco's etc). This will bring up all the people who work in your desired job who used to work in retail. Now you have a list of people to connect with and ask them how they made a similar leap. Do you know what the great thing is about this approach? Because you have something in common (retail) they are more likely to respond to your message. After all, once you've been in retail it will always be part of you even after you've escaped. P.S My practice manager example brought up 80 people that's made a similar leap from retail into healthcare. Imagine what I could learn from 80 people!
