Using the Science of Hope to Promote A Hope Centered Organizational Culture Where Well-Being Is The Outcome
Nurturing Hope During Adversity: Hope As A Framework For Action Hope is a protective factor helping us cope with daily life stress and is a psychological strength that can be taught. Likewise, hope can also be robbed. Our research shows that exposure to adversity impacts the nature of our goals, feelings of urgency and despair constrain our pathways thinking, and willpower is degraded through fear and uncertainty. The good news is that hope can be taught and more importantly nurtured through intentional program services. Our publication in the Journal of Community Psychology shows simple strategies human and social service providers use to nurture hope and goal achievement among adults experiencing the adversity of homelessness. I am forever proud of our partnerships with human service agencies and community partners to advance the Science of Hope. Angela Pharris, Ph.D., and I use this research-based evidence as a framework to advance the hope centered organization. Agency hope navigators develop strategic plans to implement hope centered programs to improve client outcomes and promote employee wellbeing. #hopescience #wellbeing #humanservice

"I advocate for a reformed approach to justice-involved youth. Here are the key strategies from my perspective: Community-Based Programs: Let’s shift from detention to community-based programs. These focus on education, mental health services, and skill development, aiding societal reintegration. Culturally Relevant Rehabilitation: Our programs should be culturally sensitive, addressing the unique needs and experiences of each individual. Family Involvement: Actively involving the family in the rehabilitation process provides emotional support and stability. Education and Vocational Training: Quality education and vocational training equip young men and women with skills for a successful future and reduce reoffending. Mental Health Services: Integrated mental health services address issues and support overall well-being. Restorative Justice Programs: Programs focusing on restorative justice promote empathy and responsibility. Workforce Development and Employability: Incorporating workforce development initiatives and creating pathways to college and employment opportunities can reduce recidivism and promote long-term success. The goal should be to support our youth in becoming responsible and productive members of society." #JusticeReform #YouthEmpowerment #RehabilitationOverDetention #WorkforceDevelopment #PathwaysToSuccess

Proud to have completed the "Supporting Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities and Mental Illness" course from Alison. It deepened my understanding of how quality care stems from truly knowing each individual’s needs. I learned about the key principles of support work, the role of community resources, and the impact of language on individuals with disabilities. This training is a valuable addition to my nursing education and will help me provide more compassionate, effective care. #MentalHealthSupport #InclusiveCare #DisabilityAwareness #Alison #HealthcareTraining #IntellectualDisabilities

𝙈𝙖𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨 𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙘𝙘𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙬𝙖𝙮 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙨𝙚 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙖𝙡𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙮 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙖𝙘𝙘𝙚𝙨𝙨. This is so great to see. And of course, the next step - ALL conferences, regardless of topic or target group, being this accessible! These aren't 'adjustments' or 'accommodations', really. They're Universal Design. Running a space in this way doesn't *harm* others who don't require these particular things to access a conference (or workplace, or place of business, etc) and in fact, will benefit others attending! Are you prone to migraines or headaches? The lower intensity lighting will help you! Anxiety? Knowing what to expect in a new setting will make you feel safer. Hey, hungover on conference day after a few too many welcome drinks the night before? No judgement - enjoy the gentler lighting, feel relief at the lack of loud applause, maybe even rest on a beanbag for a bit! Making things more accessible for all takes nothing away from those who already have access.

Here is a brilliant example of what should be accessibility standard practice at all conferences. 🙌✨ I am privileged to speak at many conferences, ranging from the more inclusive and accessiblility away (mental health or disability based usually) to the less so (professional, leadership, corporate ones). 📣 Most of them exhaust me and do a number on my already overcharged nervous system, purely from the lack of understanding that people with different access needs exist, let alone need accommodations. 🤦🏻♀️ This is the third year I’ve spoken at the wonderful Yellow Ladybugs conference and they always continue to knock it out of the park! 🦄 I’m not saying they are perfect (who is?) but the practice of continuously listening to the needs of their community and implementing more accessible and inclusive practices is #goals 🫶 What do you wish more conferences would do to make them accessible to you? ⬇️⬇️⬇️ 🎧 I always ask for a low-sensory space (which at the National Suicide Prevention Australia conference where I spoke at in 2023 was the tiny first-aid room - take what I can get). 💻 I also prefer online options and recordings for more choice and control over my attendance and participation (including giving me the ability to regulate my attention, processing of information and needed breaks). 👏 I adore the deaf applause of waving hands in the air rather than the overwhelming noise of clapping hands together in a huge crowd that is physically painful to me. ➡️ This is #neuroaccessibility #Neurodiversity #Neurodivergent #NeurodiversityAtWork #NothingWithoutUs #DisabilityRights #ChronicIllness #InvisibleDisability #MentalHealth #Autistic #ADHD #PTSD #Anxiety #Trauma

Let's chat about the cycle of emotional ups and downs that can pass through generations! It often kicks off with childhood challenges like not getting enough love or support, creating a bumpy road for emotional well-being in adulthood. Adults who experienced such challenges may inadvertently perpetuate the cycle by exhibiting unsupportive parenting behaviours and failing to provide emotional support to their own children. This can make it tricky for the little ones to learn self-regulation skills, and thus the cycle keeps rolling. But here's the good news - we can break this cycle together! Therapeutic approaches such as trauma-focused therapies, cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), and parenting interventions play pivotal roles in breaking the cycle and fostering healthier emotional development, while community resources and social support systems contribute to creating a protective environment for individuals and families at risk. Let's spread the love, break that cycle, and build a bright future together! 💚🔄✨ #emotionalregulation #mentalhealth #selfcare #complexptsd #parenting
