Portland State University will facilitate and host the Metro Region Innovation Hub (the Hub) beginning in July of 2024. Funded by Business Oregon and other community partners, the Hub serves the tri-county Metro area and will provide regional entrepreneurs from all sectors, backgrounds, and business stages with accessible paths to all existing regional resources in networking, coaching, education, and capital access in order to foster and grow innovation-based businesses. An invisible driver of success for many entrepreneurial ecosystems is local connectors who know what resources are available and the criteria for accessing them, and who regularly talk to entrepreneurs and provide intros to access those resources. For many communities, however, there are too few of those people, disparities in who can access those people (e.g. in terms of race and gender), and the labor for people who take on those roles is often informal and uncompensated. The Hub will directly invest in that driver with a closely coordinated team of visible and knowledgeable Navigators that any entrepreneur can easily and equitably access. The Hub is now accepting applications for a Director (https://lnkd.in/gghV7q9W Navigators (https://lnkd.in/gFv23RW8)

Exploring the relationship between small businesses and economic growth reveals some intriguing insights. A study shows that small businesses located in clusters—especially those tied to similar industries—can grow three times faster than the overall economy in metropolitan areas. 🚀 The implications are clear: cities should prioritize strategies that support the development of these industry clusters to maximize growth potential. For instance, initiatives like the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator are providing startups with essential resources and opportunities for networking and collaboration, fostering an environment ripe for innovation. 🌱 As we look towards the future of urban economic strategies, investing in these clusters could not only elevate local economies but also create countless job opportunities. What are your thoughts on integrating small business cluster strategies into city planning? 🤔 https://lnkd.in/eHeXiRnS

Recently, I had an inquiry about innovation districts. This is a pretty standard question that I get. So, I am going to say three things that are not necessarily right, but directionally explain behavior. 1. Most high growth entrepreneurs (i.e. they export something from their immediate vicinity) go to where rent is cheap. 2. Rarely do innovation districts offer additional services that make it worthwhile to pay higher rent. 3. Proximity is a relative value that is tied much more to having opportunities to interact than it is tied to address of physical location. This does not mean that it NEVER works to have an innovation district. It means that, in general, an innovation district or space should be consciously thinking about how to alleviate cost for entrepreneurs and the friction of interaction - not what cool features will bring people to their places/spaces. So, VCs along Sand Hill road see each other all over the place from coffee shops to t-ball games. The proximity of their offices is not what causes unique hyper connectivity - instead it is the connectivity of their communities. Pre-supposing that the gap in connectivity is because of a lack of proximity in the urban core or "cool area" that has been built misunderstands how entrepreneurs actually interact. For example, a founder can just as easily bump into a customer, employee, or funder at their local 4th of July parade as in their place of work...in the right community. Thus, think more about how those interactions actually, already happen before trying to build a physical location that will make them happen more.

Small rural areas have the opportunity to attract and retain business innovators through various strategies: Investing in Higher Education: Educational institutions such as universities and colleges play a vital role in driving innovation and creating job opportunities. They can draw in talent from around the world and foster an environment that supports entrepreneurship. Fostering Diverse Communities: Embracing diversity leads to economic growth and more equitable opportunities. By tapping into the skills of a diverse population, small towns can create vibrant ecosystems that attract entrepreneurs. Building Necessary Infrastructure: Investing in infrastructure not only ensures future growth but also helps in retaining a skilled local workforce. Establishing Local Innovation Hubs: These hubs provide entrepreneurs with a collaborative space similar to what larger cities offer. Improving Quality of Life: Enhancing local amenities, educational institutions, and safety measures can make small cities more appealing to entrepreneurs. Taking Advantage of Lower Cost of Living: Small towns often provide a more affordable living environment compared to big cities, which can be beneficial for startups with limited budgets. Highlighting Success Stories: Showcasing local entrepreneurs who have achieved success can inspire others and attract more business innovators. By focusing on these elements, small municipalities can create a supportive environment that not only attracts entrepreneurs but also encourages them to start and grow their businesses locally.

Continuing our #GETReflections series by highlighting today our #GETChampions journey from DC to Miami! These inclusive tech hubs are making huge strides in their communities. When we began, we sought the perfect blend of potential and growth. Now, Miami's on its 2nd cohort, driving equity and innovation. We made this move to Miami because our team saw South Florida's Tech industry is 2X more diverse than that of the ENTIRE tech industry across the United States. ⠀ Miami, now on its 2nd cohort, is driving equity and innovation, fueled by the vibrant diversity of South Florida's tech industry. Chicago, DC, and Miami are distinct, each with growing tech sectors and robust entrepreneurial ecosystems. But it's their differences that make them great! We believe that the diversity within and across these cities offers valuable insights into the depth and breadth of tech challenges and solutions. 💾TREND ALERT! 💾 In January, my colleague Maribel Koella listed 6 CRE trends to look for in 2024, one being the rise of tech-infused spaces. 📍In East Tennessee, several areas are emerging as hubs for technology companies and startups, driven by a combination of factors including access to talent, research institutions, supportive ecosystems, and quality of life. With these spaces, expect to see a need for: 📱research facilities 📱high-speed internet access and innovative infrastructure 📱high-quality living spaces We’re already noticing these needs coming to fruition in places like East Tennessee State University with its health tech startups and Knoxville’s “Innovation Valley.” 📊 If you’re ready to catch the high-speed train towards the future of tech, email me at rogermoore@koellamoore.com or message me on LinkedIn to discuss where you fit in this space. -- #CRE #commercialrealestate #tennessee #easterntennessee #CREbrokerage #investment #knoxville #easttennessee #propertymanagement #realestate #advisors #TN #experts #NAIKoellaRMMoore #InnovationValley #ETSU #techindustry #techstartup
