☘️To whom has interest in the topic, I would like to share two recent publications, respectively in ‘Environment and Planning C’ and in ‘Urban Geography’ journals. Both focus on urban experimentation and governance. While the first is a review of different strands of the #experimentation debate, connecting them with a framework on governance tensions and socio-ecological justice, the second goes into the everyday challenges of implementing Nature-based-solutions´ experiments. Exploring the context of Turin, it delineates governance tactics that different actors put into place to face those challenges, among which leadership and conflict management, intermediation, collaboration and facilitation of maintenance practices, improvisational governance, and engagement in the politics of experimentation. The good news is that they are both open access😊 Here the links: https://lnkd.in/deQPm98m https://lnkd.in/dJCwW94a

Urban growth demands a radical rethinking of ecological sustainability, according to groundbreaking research from Beijing Normal University. By applying scaling laws typically used in biological systems, researchers have uncovered critical insights into urban ecosystem dynamics. Traditional urban planning often overlooks complex ecological interactions, leading to unsustainable practices that threaten environmental health. This new approach integrates thermodynamic principles with urban metabolism, revealing how cities can achieve a delicate balance between expansion and ecological preservation. The study identifies 'multistable states' within urban ecosystems, demonstrating that small changes in planning or infrastructure can dramatically impact ecosystem resilience. Key findings suggest that strategic green space development and sustainable infrastructure can significantly enhance urban ecological stability. Researchers discovered that cities can anticipate and mitigate ecological challenges by understanding these scaling laws. Dr. Gengyuan Liu emphasizes that this framework provides essential insights for predicting ecological tipping points and guiding more adaptive urban design. This innovative perspective promises to transform urban planning, offering a comprehensive strategy that considers ecological, economic, and social factors. By integrating these principles, cities can create more resilient, efficient environments that support both human and ecological well-being. The research signals a pivotal moment in urban development, suggesting that sustainable cities are not just possible, but imperative for future generations. #UrbanEcology #SustainableCities #EnvironmentalInnovation

Very interesting article. Have a read!

🌍📢 Exciting News: New publication! We’ve just published our paper "Transforming Ambition into Action to Catalyse Nature-Based Solutions: Insights from 250 Good Practice Policy Instruments", presenting insights from the more than 41 countries represented in the Urban Governance Atlas 🌿 We explore how cities can turn ambitious goals for nature-based solutions (NbS) into actionable, real-world strategies by: (i) Defining seven criteria for good practices in urban NbS policy design and implementation; (ii) Assessing policy instruments from the Urban Governance Atlas against these criteria; and (iii) Identifying potential pathways and actionable measures to promote the adoption of good practices in practice. The inclusion of Latin Anerican alongside European and other global case studies fills an important gap in current NbS research and offers a more inclusive perspective on potential opportunities and effective strategies that can be applied in the policy landscape. The findings are intended to act as a catalyst for further discussion and action, with a view to optimising the delivery of NbS ambitions through more informed policy decisions. A big thank you to my co-authors Natalia Andrea Burgos Cuevas & Maren Haug Gvein, as well as to the more than 48 organisations who contributed to the Urban Governance Atlas and to the entire #INTERLACE consortium for the wonderful discussions and collaborations leading to this publication. 📢- Call for Contributions ...✏✏✏ [https://lnkd.in/dwrAmuwe] Dear Colleagues, We are launching this Special Issue (SI) as a venue for sharing with the general public the latest research on blue-green infrastructure (BGI) as a prerequisite for building effective nature-based solutions to combat emerging metropolitan challenges towards more climate-resilient and sustainable urban transformations. The aim is to compile the most recent research studies on understanding, analyzing, mainstreaming, and planning BGI in metropolitan areas and build on this existing knowledge to enlighten new visions, fostering multifunctional urban BGI through innovative methods. We invite all types of contributions (original research, reviews, communications, viewpoint, etc.) focusing on novel methodologies and original scientific contributions concerning concepts, technologies, methodologies, and tools fostering BGI for more resilient and sustainable metropolitan areas. For further details about our SI, please visit the official call via the following link [https://lnkd.in/dwrAmuwe] Artan Hysa, PhD Dr. Carla Sofia Santos Ferreira Dr. Fanxin Meng Guest Editors

We are inviting submissions of papers for a new Special Issue! It is exciting to partner up (once again) with outdoor thermal comfort legend Prof Marialena Nikolopoulou (who was also listed among the 2% most influential researchers in the world - https://lnkd.in/demvAinr) to host as co-editors a Special Issue on the adaptation to the climate emergency through design and the senses. For this special issue we place the haptics of temperature and heat within the wider context of the diverse sensory environment and question how we can redefine the design of urban environments through the synergy of senses, climates and different cultural contexts. We are particularly welcoming both scientific and creative interdisciplinary approaches that support inclusive design and address social inequalities in connection to environments of urban (dis)comfort and people’s experiences, from high level interrogations to bottom up design-led investigations. This could include, but not limited to: health and well-being research projects, urban climate walks, interactions within sense-scapes, multisensory navigation and wayfinding and inclusive design. The call for papers invites submissions of an international reach, keeping in mind how extreme weather events are spreading rapidly across the world, further feeding the climate-driven migration crisis. If you have any questions, drop Carolina a message at cv402@cam.ac.uk Deadline for Special Issue paper submission: 25 May 2025 For more info and how to submit: https://lnkd.in/d3rMRa44 Publication scheduled for late 2025 with Urban Science (ISSN 2413-8851), a Q1 ranking international journal for Urban Studies. #sensoryenvironment #urbancomfort #adaptivecapacity #environmentaldiversity #sensescape #sensoryurbanism
