As we celebrate Tourism Month this September, it's important to recognise the vital role that the events industry plays within the broader tourism sector. “From conferences and exhibitions to festivals and corporate gatherings, events are not just about bringing people together – they are powerful drivers of economic growth, cultural exchange, and community development,” says EGF chairperson John Arvanitakis. In South Africa alone, the MICE industry contributed R2 billion to the national economy in 2023 attracting international visitors and boosting local businesses in the hospitality, transport, and retail industries. However, with this influence comes the responsibility to lead by example in addressing the environmental impact that also comes with eventing. “At the EGF, we are committed to promoting sustainable practices that minimise waste, reduce carbon footprints, and prioritise local sourcing. By doing so, we not only meet the growing demand for eco-conscious events but also highlight Africa's leadership and ingenuity in sustainable tourism,” Arvanitakis explains. #TourismMonth #EventGreening #SustainableTourism #MICEIndustry #EGF #GreenEvents #ResponsibleTravel

PT2. Why your event matters to the community you select. Take a minute to tune in to this breakdown by Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau and Visit Miami. The impact of meetings, events, and bleisure tourism runs deep throughout the communities that host them. To the naked eye, it may seem just another large convention or tourist heading out on a cruise; but in truth, the importance of the opportunities created cannot be entirely quantified. 𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐲𝐚’𝐬 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐈𝐂𝐄 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 Kenya has slipped to third place in Africa’s conference industry, trailing behind Rwanda and South Africa in attracting international business events. This decline is costing the country significant opportunities in the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) sector, which is valued at over $900 billion globally and growing annually. MICE tourism, known for its high spending visitors, could have a significant impact on Kenya’s economy, but the lack of a coordinated marketing effort is limiting the country’s potential. James Mwaura, CEO of the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), addressed this issue at a recent MICE workshop in Nairobi. He emphasized the need to operationalize the Kenya National Convention Bureau (KNCB), which was created in 2019 but has remained inactive. Without a centralized body to handle bidding and promotion, Kenya is losing out to better-organized competitors like Rwanda, which have more effective strategies for attracting international events. Reviving the KNCB would enable Kenya to present a unified front in securing major conferences and events, rather than relying on fragmented efforts. The government’s goal of attracting 5 million international tourists and generating KES 824 billion in revenue by 2027 hinges on tapping into this lucrative MICE market. If Kenya can establish itself as a premier conference destination, the ripple effects on tourism, local businesses, and job creation could be transformative.
