One of the perks of having our headquarters in Washington, DC is the unique opportunity to witness the dynamic intersection of deep tech and democracy firsthand. Last night, our Communications team attended an enlightening event at the Australian Embassy titled "How Internet Culture Shapes Our World: Memes, Deep Fakes, and Virality." The event featured distinguished speakers, including: ▶ Ginny Badanes, General Manager of Democracy Forward at Microsoft ▶ Lacey Dickinson, Co-Executive Director of The Other 98% and Founder of Dickinson Digital Strategies ▶ Ami Fields-Meyer, Former Senior Policy Advisor to VP Kamala Harris ▶ Helen Toner, Director of Strategy and Foundational Research Grants at Georgetown’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET) With opening remarks by Hon Dr. Kevin Rudd AC, Australia's Ambassador to the United States, we delved into the impact of AI, disinformation, and cyber tactics on the electoral landscape. The discussion covered the effectiveness and psychology behind viral political content, as well as the technology and ethical implications of deep fakes, providing valuable insights into the modern landscape of digital communication and the responsibilities of the deep tech sector.
