Food insecurity is a reality that affects far too many of our senior neighbors — and as the National Council on Aging reports, only about half of SNAP-eligible seniors are enrolled in the crucial food assistance program. That means three out of every five seniors who qualify to receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits are missing out, an estimated 5 million people in all. We're here to help our region's seniors, and all our neighbors experiencing food insecurity, navigate the SNAP application process so they receive monthly funds to buy the food they need to thrive. Whether at a pantry distribution or any time via our Hunger Hotline, our dedicated staff is committed to helping you and your family understand the eligibility criteria, application process, and providing step-by-step guidance to simplify the process. Help us spread the word, and make sure our region's seniors receive the support they need to lead happy, healthy lives! https://lnkd.in/eP7nEXiE #SNAP #FoodInsecurity #Seniors

Thrilled to share our new publication in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics on food insecurity among older Americans eligible for nutrition assistance! Thanks to the amazing RAND team Tamara Dubowitz, Jonathan Cantor, Madhumita Ghosh-Dastidar, Andrea Richardson, Rachel Burns, Matthew Baird, and Robin Beckman! Briefly, we found that older Americans that are eligible for but not participating in nutrition assistance programs like SNAP may be experiencing food insecurity and financial hardship. Older Americans that are not enrolled in SNAP are likely to benefit from nutrition assistance outreach and enrollment. We used longitudinal survey data from the PHRESH study and a multivariable linear model to explore changes in food insecurity and financial hardship among SNAP participants and eligible nonparticipants. We found that SNAP participants experienced a greater improvement in food security between 2020-2021 relative to SNAP-eligible nonparticipants. More than one-third of SNAP participants and eligible nonparticipants experienced food insecurity and financial hardship. Perceived ineligibility and perceived lack of need were the most common reasons for not participating in SNAP.

LT shared during a recent visit that over the past year, money to purchase food has become tight and there are times when by the end of the month, they do not have the resources to purchase enough food. In the US, 12.8% of individuals, 17 million households, and 16% of individuals with diabetes report experiencing food insecurity. From 2021 to 2022, the prevalence significantly increased by 2.6% within the US population. Food insecurity has racial inequities and has higher incidence in American or Alaska Native, Black, Hispanic, or multiracial households.
