We started the week by sharing with you two publications on the subject of petfood by Ana Freitas and collaborators from UCIBIO. The review article published in "Current Opinion in Food Science" (IF=9.9) compiles recent evidence that raw pet food poses a risk to human health, with Salmonella in the case of Gram-negative bacteria and Enterococcus in the case of Gram-positive bacteria being the focus of most of the evidence. The second article published in "Eurosurveillance" (IF=19) demonstrates that processed pet food is a safer option than raw pet food since different European brands of the latter can contain multi-resistant bacteria, including pathogenic Salmonella spread worldwide and Escherichia coli with genes coding for resistance to colistin, an extremely important antibiotic for human medicine.
