Every day, our veterans and military personnel face challenges that most can't even imagine. Sadly, the struggles they endure can sometimes become overwhelming. Today, my heart aches for a fellow military member who recently lost their battle. I did not know the member directly, but I understand the struggle all too well. If you know or suspect someone is struggling or maybe just acting a bit off, call them, go to them, check on them. Be there, even if they say nothing is wrong, go have coffee, talk over a beer, play golf, turn on a video game, anything to show that person they matter, that they will be missed, and that their friends and family and coworkers need them. It's crucial that we all play a part in preventing suicide among our brave servicemembers. Reach out, lend a hand, be a friend. If you or someone you know is struggling, please don't hesitate to ask for help. Dial 988 to connect with the support you need. Press 1 for veteran-specific assistance. Remember, one life lost to suicide is one too many. With the war on terror more or less completed (with exception to the advisory forces in Iraq and parts of Syria), service members with serious injury will be front and center in debates about long term quality of life and healthcare treatment. For my first Medium post, I discuss a research study I ran a couple years about how we measure quality of life in post 9/11 combat veterans with combat injuries that impact mobility (i.e. lower extremity injuries like amputation and musculoskeletal injury). I also discuss how this information can be better used by policymakers and leaders to create new programs and interventions that better serve this cohort, and those like them. #writing #military #veteran #disability #amputation #injury #leg #spine #research

RECONNECTING WITH CONVERSATIONS 🎙️🗣️ How much violence can any human endure without being changed by it? The simple answer is any exposure to violence will change a person’s perspective on life. Veterans, however, are unlikely to ever speak about their military service or their combat deployment in a truthful, emotionally restorative conversation. 📚 They don’t speak about their deployments when they return home, because their loved ones worried so much about them while they were away. They follow a simple rule that civilians do not need to hear about the horrors of war. Family members most frequently say that they don’t ask about the deployment, because they can see how those conversations trouble their veterans. Both perspectives are well-meaning but are misguided. #therapistsofig #therapistsofinstagram #military #veterans #militaryart #counseling #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthsupport #healingjourney #ptsdrecovery #ptsdhealing #mentalhealthart

So the VA won't let me see a primary care doctor, but they will get me some psychoactive drug, or ketamine therapy? Unbelievable!!!! They won't approve veterans to get service dogs, but will pump them full of illegal, illicit drugs. Makes sense right? So, what happens when those drugs aren't enough, what's the next step? I think we all know the answer...they turn to the streets for something stronger...fill that void and scratch that itch. Hence the homeless, jobless, drug addicted veteran population in every major city in America. Just like marijuana, when that high isn't good enough anymore, what do people turn too...It doesn't take a rocket scientist or some doctor to figure this out. If the VA would just approve veterans for the care they need, or the benefits they deserve, you know a huge portion of this suicide problem would be fixed right? We need to stop this movement, right here, right now!
War is risky business. And not always in the way you might think. More than 7,000 American military members were killed in the post-9/11 wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Approximately 18X that number of military members and veterans have died by suicide over the same period. This morning our partners at Heroic Hearts Project held a press conference on Capitol Hill to urge the FDA to approve treatments that will save the lives of veterans. To visualize the issue, they left a small mountain of dog tags, one for each veteran suicide. On August 11th, the FDA plans to rule on whether to approve MDMA assisted therapy, which has been effective in bringing relief to veterans suffering with #PTSD. During war we expect that our government will do what it can to mitigate the risks of war to our soldiers. We – to include the FDA -- must do the same for them when the wars are over. https://lnkd.in/enFWPW5r
