Despite high expectations for significant progress at the #cop28 climate summit, influential oil countries softened the commitment from 'phasing out' to 'reducing' fossil fuels, diminishing the urgency to act. Amidst this, small island nations are protesting, viewing the latest agreements as dangerously inadequate. Discussions at the Extreme Hangout revealed widespread frustration and calls for stronger, science-based action. The expected outcome is a vague agreement trying to please all sides, but there's hope it might still encourage a shift towards a healthier, more sustainable world. Global Ocean Director, IUCN Centre for Conservation Action

#COP28UAE gavelled! The verdict is out, but we must and we will continue working collectively to enhance ambition and drive the implementation of ambitious and concrete ocean-based climate actions. The Ocean Breakthroughs offers 5 pathways to catalyze action to achieve a healthy and productive ocean. Marine conservation is a key sector to advance and scale-up ocean-based climate action. Incredibly diverse – from coral reefs, mangroves, saltmarshes to kelp forests and much more, marine and coastal ecosystems have a natural capacity for carbon storage and sequestration and hold great potential to deliver numerous co-benefits for people and Nature. These ecosystems are essential to food security and act as natural buffers against coastal erosion and the impacts of extreme weather events. Protecting, conserving, and restoring marine and coastal ecosystems is therefore critical to support the resilience and adaptation of coastal communities, and to deliver on global goals on Nature and Climate.
