The Big Conversation at the ICB Women’s Health Event
I was humbled to share a room and a stage with such inspirational women who have continued to fight for health equality, standing on the shoulders of the remarkable women from our North East region.
It was impressive to see the progress made in just two short years to get women’s health on the map, and the number of attendees at the conference. However, I couldn’t help but notice that I was one of the few males in the room.
Samantha Allen, Chief Executive of the ICB, noted that she may well have been preaching to the converted, but also highlighted that women tend to be great amplifiers, delivering messages to their peers.
It’s crucial for those who do not identify as women to not only listen, but to actively support and advocate for women’s health issues. As Dame Lesley Regan said, “Get it right for women and everyone benefits."
This starts with the basics such as de-stigmatising menstruation and menopause and removing gender-specific education.
Why was I there?
Women’s health encompasses more than just fertility and menopause. Cardiovascular diseases are one of the biggest threats to women’s health, especially as we live longer. However, there exists a ‘gender health gap’. Women tend to present with symptoms of cardiovascular diseases differently than men, and clinical guidelines are often informed by research with poor representation of women. This can lead to misdiagnosis and suboptimal care.
This is where AIATELLA, comes in. By enabling precision medicine, we focus on the individual, free from bias. With the support of Health Innovation North East and North Cumbria, our solution will contribute to giving every woman receives the care she deserves.

💭 HI NENC's Chief Executive, Dr Nicola Hutchinson, shared her thoughts at the Women's Health Innovation Conference, last week: "When we're designing healthcare and healthcare systems, or supporting new innovations of practice, we've always got to remember that this is what we're doing it for. We're supporting patients."

I recently had the chance to attend a Digital Health event organized by Digital Health Institute for Transformation (DHIT) dedicated to Empowering Women in Health & Innovation. It was a delight to listen to Kimberly Hames as she shared invaluable insights on community engagement and highlighted the value that women bring towards enhancing health and technology.
Here are some key takeaways that I would like to share:
🎓 Educating women around health literacy is essential in order to provide better health outcomes.
🏥 Understanding the components of quality care empowers women to advocate more effectively for their own health needs.
👩🏻⚕ Addressing unconscious biases by care providers is important to ensure all voices are heard, regardless of an individual's race or ethnicity.
A quote from the speaker that deeply resonated with me and that I intend to carry forward in my journey within the healthcare industry is, "Every leader within the health ecosystem holds power to play a pivotal role in shaping the healthcare system"
❗️Finally, women's health shouldn't be a topic to be discussed in the #WomensHistoryMonth alone; instead, it is crucial to take proactive steps towards fostering inclusivity and equity within the healthcare system without further delay.

Very stimulating and engaging session! I brought my perspective on how technology and computational tools can help better understanding female biology to close gender-based research gaps and improve sex-specific data on diseases. We need new guidelines and protocols to ensure adequate patient representation in clinical trials. #goodsimulationpractice represents a great opportunity to lead change!

HLTH Europe thrives on striking statistics. This week, we heard that women are up to 7 times more likely than men to have a heart condition misdiagnosed and be discharged during a heart attack. We learned that a whopping 15 million women use menstrual tracking apps. We were disappointed by the suggestion that women who run women's health companies raise less funding, and make lower valuations, than men who run women's health companies.
On the main stage, Priya Agrawal, VP, Health Equity & Partnerships at MSD explained: "As soon as you say women's health, investors think 'niche'. How is 50% of the population niche? So I don't want people investing in women's health because it's the moral, nice thing to do. I want people to invest because it's a smart thing to do."
Women are not a minority. Women's health is not a niche market. And the potential for growth in this market is immense: a staggering $1 trillion opportunity lies in bridging the women's health gap. It's a classic case of a win-win situation where promoting equity and boosting business outcomes go hand in hand.
In recognition of this opportunity, HLTH Europe has prioritised women’s health in its inaugural edition, dedicating a stage, programming, and floor space to it. Under-discussed topics such as incontinence, endometriosis, overactive bladder, and women’s pain were given airtime. The ideation workshop, facilitated by the global consulting firm Kearney, provided a rare platform to delve deeper into the complex ‘how’ questions and actionable takeaways.
In the meantime, we are already looking ahead to HLTH Europe 2025. Get our take on maximising its platform for your brand: https://lnkd.in/eKX_PUtN#HLTHEurope#WomensHealth#Healthcare
