🔥General Catalyst's bold move to acquire Summa Health isn't just a game-changer; I can't think of a comparable move anywhere in healthcare in the last 20 years. By flipping Summa Health into a for-profit entity while doubling down on community care, this acquisition is like a shot of adrenaline for the industry. 💡 This could set a precedent that healthcare desperately needs. It's all about putting patients first, delivering value-based care, and reshaping the healthcare landscape as we know it. Get ready for the healthcare makeover of the century! I don't have much skepticism that this new healthcare entity (Summa Health + HATco) will do some very innovative things and will noticeably improve several key outcomes. Cliff Deveny, Marc Harrison, and General Catalyst are no dummies. My concern is this is such a unique combination of variables (people, $$$, tech, situation, etc.), only a small % of other healthcare orgs will be able to adopt it. Broad replicability is ideal and sorely needed. #healthcare #healthcaretransformation #qualityimprovement #privateequity #venturecapital #mergersandacquisitions #patientexperience #healthoutcomes https://lnkd.in/gWmeywDJ

Venture capital giant General Catalyst announced this week that it plans to acquire Akron, Ohio-based health system Summa Health, marking the first time a VC firm will buy a health system. Via its newly formed company, the Health Assurance Transformation Corporation, or HATCo, General Catalyst plans to use Summa Health as a testing ground for health tech developed by the VC firm’s portfolio companies. Summa president and CEO Cliff Deveny MD said the deal will allow the health system to "increase local investment and introduce new resources that allow us to expand access to affordable, quality, coordinated care." Have you heard? A VC firm bought a health system. There have been, and will continue to be, many opinions about this development -- and rightly so. Healthcare innovation is a popular topic, and there are countless angles to this story. To me, the biggest opportunity here is to build a new healthcare foundation -- one that first addresses the most pressing shortcomings of our current system. The core of medicine will always be frontline care delivery -- any fixes must start and end there. General Catalyst's acquisition of Summa Health represents an opportunity to do something truly innovative: resurrect the doctor-patient relationship. #medicine #healthcare #health #healthtech #healthcaretechnology #healthcareinnovation #digitalhealth #venturecapital

Entrepreneur | Speaker | Author | Board Member | Recognized as an expert in helping entrepreneurs take their businesses to the next level
Yesterday, I got to interview Dennis Depenbusch for Digital Health KC's Healthcare 201 series. Entrepreneur turned investor, Dennis always has valuable things to say and last night was no exception. With a packed room, Dennis started by saying that this room is "exactly the kind of thing investors like to see and it's remarkable what Digital Health KC has been able to do in just a year." Dennis wouldn't say this if he didn't mean it. We even had an investor from Chicago join us. Thank you, Jonathan Ellis of Sandalphon Capital, for joining us! When I introduced Dennis, I said that Dennis invited me to Park City for a Mid-America Healthcare Investors Network (MHIN) meeting in 2021. Had I not been there to hear SpringTide Ventures' Austin Walters talk, I wouldn't have had the chain of events that set me on the Digital Health KC path. That is the power of getting in the same room, sharing ideas, and opening your eyes to new possibilities. I challenged the audience to find one thing Dennis said and fill in the blanks for themselves: "Had I not heard Dennis say ____, I would not have ______." Let's see who wins the contest. While it's still early, Dennis' words that have been playing in my head the most are "Know what is important; cut the rest." He said these words within the context of the moments when companies need to downsize to survive, and he gave an example of a company that had to go from 58 to 3 people but then they made their way out of the danger zone and into success. While I am not in that situation today, "Know what is important; cut the rest." is a powerful mantra in how we use our resources, especially our time. Let's see where Dennis' wisdom takes me. How about the rest of my friends in the room, what words are circling in your head? Dick Flanigan, FACHE, Elizabeth Shaffer, PMP, Tanner McDermott, Meredith Evans McAllister, Kyle McAllister, Vanessa Jupe, Brandy Archie, OTD, OTR/L, CLIPP, Caroline VanDeusen, Shekhar Gupta, Dr. Saroj Gupta, Sarah Sourk, Chuck Schneider, Bob Wald, MS, Jonathan Gregory, Jonathan Ellis, Laura Owen, Linda Van Horn, MBA, Mark Hrinya, Jane New, Rebecca MacKinnon, Rebecca Light, Stanley Edlavitch, Jim Starcev, John Travis, JennyLou Spoon, Doug Rogers, Donnie Hampton, Amie Teske, and everyone else in the room. I apologize that this isn't the complete list. If you see someone I missed, please tag them in the comments. Thank you to Gregory Kratofil Jr. and our friends at Polsinelli for sharing your wonderful space with us so we could have so many connections and conversations happen! #digitalhealth #kansascity Great things are happening!

Having been the only clinician or doctor in the c-suite, this picture is familiar to me, where it was not humanistic values at the head of the table. Most hospital boards are 70% non-clinicians and mostly bankers and Wall Street. They may be brilliant at math, but out of touch with human realities. Models built on spreadsheets do not get implemented smoothly when those in the frontline have to deliver news on cancer, discuss end-of-life or death with dignity, or fertility. Can you really "optimize" and "add efficiency" to sitting, face-to-face, kind expression, as someone processes what it means to be a mother and to know she will never be able to do that biologically but could adopt or do foster care? Most of those on boards receive VIP and concierge care and do not have the "regular person" experience of care they sign off on for others. When we talk of "medical gaslighting" and "doctors don't listen", where is that coming from? Personally, I was overtly told to speed up, cut my visit time by 1-5 minutes, and it was expected I would then get more patient complaints. I had zero patient complaints and being well below average (here a good thing) was not valued as compared to my being at the mean (within a margin of error slightly below) for patients seen per hour. The way averages work, mathematically, you will always have half "below" and what actually matters is variation or spread of data. If you shame and reprimand people for every 30 seconds spent on compassionate care, you will definitely create environments where patients are not "heard." The "fail fast" mentality needs to have guardrails so harm does not reach patients or staff or institutional reputation. These healthcare overlords bring the same unrealistic ideas - that gave us the 2008 crash and SVB failure - now applied to #healthcare. #VC mean well but they do not think about how much their need to deliver quick returns has shaped their world view in ways that is opposite to the ethos and ethics of medicine. That is not to say VC do not have a role to play, rather there needs to be more humility from them. Wall Street folks with humility is a bit of an oxymoron.
