As I've mentioned before, we are seeing a big increase in the number of older mums, with research from 2021 showing the median age of Australian mums is now 31.7 years old - the highest it's ever been. On top of that, the fertility of women ages 40-45 has also tripled! With that said, age does remain a factor. After a woman hits 37, the chances of her conceiving half every year after that and miscarriage rates go up exponentially. And while pathways like IVF can be a solution, undergoing IVF in your 40s is often challenging and may not always overcome the impact of age. That doesn't mean that IVF is not going to work, however, or that spontaneous pregnancy isn't a possibility - after all, the numbers show that plenty of older women are becoming mums! If you're interested in hearing more, I did an interview with ABC Perth a couple of years ago discussing this subject. You can find it here: https://lnkd.in/gsiHvFvY #fertility #womenshealth #fertilityspecialist #interview #miscarriage #ivf #australianwomen #startingafamily #perth Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC)

Did you know that Black women are twice as likely to struggle with infertility versus their white counterparts, but only 8% will seek fertility treatment (compared to 15% of white women)? This is due in part to a higher prevalence of uterine fibroids, ovulatory dysfunction, and tubal disease, but the racial disparities in the care women of color receive (including maternal healthcare) is also a huge factor. We sat down with Illume Fertility’s Nurse Practitioner, Thelma Osei for an honest look at why Black women struggle to access fertility care and experience high rates of maternal mortality. Here’s what she had to say: “As a Nurse Practitioner working in the medical field who also happens to be a woman of color, I have a unique perspective on the state of fertility care. The racial disparities between Black women and white women when it comes to reproductive and maternal health outcomes are shocking.” Learn what the research says and how the extra challenges that women of color face when trying to build their families greatly impacts their futures. #fertilitycare #infertilityawareness #infertilitycommunity #ttc #ivfcommunity #maternalhealth #blackhistorymonth #blackfertility #blackmomsmatter

It’s National Social Work Month and sadly I’m very disappointed in the National Association of Social Workers. With the Supreme Court of Alabama’s decision to label frozen embryos as children, there has not been a response from them. Infertility impacts 1 in 6 people and it impacts everyone. It’s not just a “white” person problem. BIPOC women are 1.5-2 times more likely than White women to experience infertility, but 70% do not have access to fertility treatments, such as IVF. 29 states do not have mandated insurance coverage, which means in order to access treatment, people are paying out of pocket. The average cost of IVF is around $45,000. In 2021, the average income of a black family was $41,500. Also, adoption costs just as much as IVF. I thought as social workers we helped those that were oppressed and helped people get access to treatment. Silence speaks volumes. You can’t say you support an issue if you never talk about it. When I reached out to cancel my membership because it seemed like the organization was not aligned with issues that were important to me, instead of a conversation, they replied do you want to cancel your membership now or wait until June to let it lapse. #racialequity #infertility #nasw #socialwork #alabama #ivf

Ever wonder what the typical routes to fertility are for single individuals eager to start a family? Single women looking to become a parent can get an IUI and IVF with a donor sample that can be known or unknown. Male patients require an egg donor and a gestational carrier. Also, depending on where they are in the process, individuals who are transitioning from their gender assigned at birth can change how they respond to medication. Patients who are male but are transitioning to female will need to go through the same considerations when choosing a gestational carrier and egg donor. A nurse turned entrepreneur @Binto - Reinventing the way women take care of their health. Start-up lover | Investor | IVF Mom | Women's Health Advocate
1 in 6 women will go through infertility. That's over 13 million women in the U.S. and counting. These women will often do whatever they need to build the family of their dreams (yep, I am one of those). But guess what? The other 5 in 6 people trying to get pregnant also look for fertility support and, of course, support for their subsequent pregnancies. This is now one of Andi Lucas Schmerin PA-C's and my favorite points to bring up with investors or in conversations with other industry leaders; Binto goes after ALL of the women who are TTC, not just the 1 in 6. That's about 65M women in the U.S. One of the main reasons why we launched BINTO as direct-to-consumer first, alongside partnerships with fertility clinics and OBGYN offices. Less red tape (which Andi and I know all too well since we both come from the clinical setting) and a larger market. #entrepreneur #marketsize #fertility #womenshealth #founder

One of the world's biggest problems not being talked about nearly enough? Easy -- plummeting fertility rates. After World War II, the average American woman gave birth to 4 children in her lifetime; that number has now dropped to just 1.6. It's also worth calling out that the Replacement Rate (the number of children that need to be born in order to replace the generation before it) currently sits at 2.1. So, the 1.6 children born per woman today is not enough to replace the generation prior, which points to a big problem — population decline. What this also points to, is the unquestionable importance of reproductive medicine as an important tool to ensure those who want to bring a child into the world, actually can. Today, close to 20% of the global population is impacted by infertility, unable to bring a child into the world "naturally." That's 64 MILLION couples globally that need better access to IVF. There are huge additional pockets of the population that turn to IVF for reasons other than infertility (same-sex couples, genetic carriers, egg-freezers/fertility preservation, etc). Advances in the accessibility of IVF and overall women's health are crucial, now. The alarming nature of this problem makes us even more excited to launch Dandi Fertility, on a mission to provide better care for millions of people facing fertility struggles. In doing so, we plan to not only show up for those in their moments of great vulnerability, but also support a path towards improving the global fertility crisis. #nationalinfertilityawarenessweek #niaw #fertility #womenshealth #ivf #populationdecline #startupfounder Leyla Bilali, BSN, RN Maggie Belshé Lara Robbins Tracy Cohen Haley Longman Michael Scott Cohen Kara La Forgia, Esq.
