Q: Hello,   I am hoping you might forward my question to Craig Boddington.   A friend of mine gave me a Ruger Magnum Rifle in .416 Rigby.  When I mentioned this to Jason Roussos, he suggested I start shooting it without a scope.  That is what I did but I also started shooting with reduced loads.  In Craig’s book Buffalo II, he suggested at .375 might be optimal for Cape buffalo.  With a 300 grain Barnes TSX bullet behind 93.4 grains of IMR 4350 I am getting .375 velocities. My question is, can a .416 rifle be a two- or three-gun safari rifle using full and reduced loads?  That is, a full load; a reduced load for emulating a .375; and a further reduced load for some of the smaller plains game.    Just wondering and thanks, Bob A: Bob, it’s an interesting concept…but on safari I’m not sure it works. I have tried multiple loads for various rifles. As you change  bullet weights, point of impact is bound to change, perhaps significantly. You can have the data clear in your mind and understand the difference, but I’ve found it too complicated and fraught with error. You’re loaded up for a buffalo, but world record gazelle (or three-toed gazork presents at 300 yards. The reverse: You leave camp looking for a small antelope for camp meat and you run into a buffalo. Just one more complexity in the heat of the moment. I have tried, not always time to change loads.   The magic of Africa is you always leave camp with a game plan…but you never know exactly what you might run into. While both the heavy rifle and the plains game rifle both have obvious uses on general bag/full bag safaris, to me the real secret to sensible African rifles is versatility.   That has always been the .375’s stock-in-trade: A good 300-grain  bullet will handle almost everything. Maybe carry a few solids in case elephant suddently comes into play.   The same is true of the .416s (Rigby/Remington/Ruger). Unless you’re hunting elephant, no real need for a 400-grain bullet; a 300-grain or 350-grain bullet is faster and flatter-shooting than the 400-grain, and plenty for buffalo.   Jason obviously knows his stuff. Good advice to practice and become proficient with iron sights. However, with a scope like a 2-7X or a modern 8xZoom in 1-8, a .416 with lighter bullets (300 or 350-grain loaded fast), no other rifle is needed. And, unless you just want to, I can’t imagine using anything but a scope. Except for elephant, where iron sights are absolutely superior.   The big Ruger is heavy enough that, with practice, recoil should be sustainable…and is much less with the lighter bullet, even loaded fast, than with a 400-grain bullet even at the standard 2400 fps.   Anyway, great question and discussion, just my thoughts.   All best, Craig
