If we are to build equitable workplaces and society we have to understand and dissect power and privilege; who holds it, when do they hold it, why do they hold it, what happens when we disrupt it and what happens when it's redistributed or shared? I love this TEDxAuckland talk from Thomas Owen which prompts us to think about privilege, what it means and what happens when we lose it. Some key outtakes for me:   ✍ Privilege is not binary - it's more complex than that because it relates to our intersectional identities and so our power and privilege depends on the spaces and time we are in. We may hold privilege in one context or time and can find that we lose it in others.   ✍ We don't always know we have privilege and it can take the prospect of losing it to realise it was there in the first place. If we do not address people's feelings of privilege loss then we risk fueling anger, resentment and people looking to blame others.   ✍ Tactics to evade accountability for privilege include denial of privilege, justifying inequality as the 'right order' to things, delegitimizing the non-privileged as unworthy of privilege, only discussing your privilege when feeling absolute comfort in doing so and privilege solidarity by comforting people against threats to our joint privilege.   We are not all immune to having privilege nor to the loss of it so in our quest to create an equitable future let's challenge ourselves to have empathy, remember we are all human and take a radically inclusive approach which refuses to other in the process. 💫

Living with fear whilst trying to remain hopeful are common behaviours among people with disabilities. In this excellent #tedxtalk Emma Bennison MBA GAICD dispells the myth that society believes people with disabilities are contagious. Instead, Emma, a well known disability rights advocate, points to the noises, behaviours and optics that can accompany a person’s demeanour and the fear that can accompany these. Rather than wait for a government response, to policy change, Emma advocates that society make behavioural change without delay. Recognising that fear is contagious Emma promotes the use of a ritual, to assist people to be at their BEST. A mnemonic that simply means Breath, Empathise, Smile and Talk. Everyone has the right to live without fear and with inclusion. Thank you Emma for being at your best and for calling out society’s need to be fearless. TIME FLIES WHEN YOU’RE FIGHTING DISCRIMINATION 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ It’s 20 years since the repeal of #section28, so it feels like a good time to re-share this TED talk. This was my third turn on the red dot and, honestly, I almost didn’t accept the invite. Why? Because, having been asked to speak about LGBTQIA+ discrimination, I was afraid. I was afraid of reprisals, of any negative impact on my business and of being typecast as some kind of activist. And then, I had a word with myself. I’m a bloody good coach. I’m a bloody good speaker. I’m a bloody good trainer, business consultant and author. I’m also gay. And totally out. And it was a long and heart-battering journey to get here. Am I passionate about protecting human rights? Yes. Am I committed to defending #LGBTQIA people and THEIR human rights? YES! And so, who am I to *not* agree to deliver on this topic. I am by no means a spokeswoman for all people who identify as LGBTQIA+. I don’t identify as an activist as such. I DO identify as someone who is fiercely protective of people’s right to love who they love, identify in their truth and to be treated with respect. I don’t think that’s activism. I believe that’s being a good human being. If someone else wants to throw labels at me, that’s up to them. On the day, I spoke from the heart and hoped to be well received. Well received was an understatement. On shaky legs, I stepped down from the stage and released a breath I didn’t realise I’d been holding. We must continue to protect human rights. We must be vigilant against discrimination and bigotry. And we must also be aware of, and on the lookout for, our own unconscious bias, at all times. We all have some. We need to strive to not keep that secret from our conscious selves. I remember marching against the repugnant Section 28 with Asha, in our early years together. I remember, years before that, when I was still a journalist, hearing the clause being trotted out as an excuse for all kinds of awful discriminatory behaviour. I remember us celebrating when it was finally snuffed out. My TED talk wasn’t specifically about 28, but it did address the some of the ignorance and homophobic attitudes that still exist today. Watch if you will. I hope it helps create a little more understanding about the currents of backwards beliefs and ‘bantz’ that still hide in plain sight. Let’s keep moving forwards. Please.
