If you own - or work in the restaurant and bar industry, this should be something to pay attention to as soon as possible. In October 2023, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) proposed a rule that would force U.S. businesses to eliminate the use of service fees and surcharges. The rule would require operators to post total prices for a service or good, reflecting all costs except shipping and government charges. Higher menu prices will lead to fewer customers and less income for restaurant workers. Restaurants cannot afford the $3.5 billion in projected compliance costs. Restaurants in Florida are experiencing some major shifts in the industry, according to a report by Square, like spending more of their money on the weekends compared to the middle of the week during the COVID pandemic. While weekends are now once again becoming peak dining out times post Covid, having a positive bottom line remains difficult. People are eating out less for lunch to save money and takeout and delivery at night has increased. Example: Percentage point change in weekly share of transactions from 2019 to 2023 in Miami sales are down 3.1 for lunch but up 2.6 for dinner The conclusion: Restaurants in Florida are experiencing changes to labor costs, payroll, and consumer preferences this summer.
