The recent incident involving Tyreek Hill and a Miami-Dade police officer is disheartening from both a professional and personal perspective. While athletes being detained or arrested isn’t new, this particular situation feels especially disappointing. At AS'E Sports, we are deeply committed to promoting the safety and well-being of athletes through our consulting efforts. In light of this event, I believe it's worth considering a proactive approach for sport organizations in which players are housed at a hotel prior to home games, if not doing so already. By transporting both players and staff to the stadium together, we can enhance security and provide a structured environment similar to the protocols used for away games. During my time in college athletics, our team adopted this approach, staying at a hotel before both home and away games. Of course, during travel to the stadium, we always had a police escort. This strategy can offer numerous benefits, including improved safety, team unity, and preventing incidents like the one we saw last Sunday in Miami. When North Carolina State tipped off in the ACC tournament three weeks ago, the Wolfpack had a 17-14 record and an infinitesimal chance of making the NCAA tournament. But they ripped off five wins in five days to steal an automatic berth to March Madness. Then they went on a wild run even by the standards of an event known for insanity. Now they’re easily the most improbable Final Four team of the past decade. What were the odds of the Wolfpack getting this far? To find out, you can take the win probabilities for each of the past four games from the college-basketball statistical website kenpom.com, then multiply those percentages to quantify the rough likelihood of a Final Four run. N.C. State was a 1-in-88 long shot. But even that number doesn’t accurately convey how unexpected this Final Four romp has been. That’s because the Wolfpack really had to survive and advance nine times. The chance of that happening wasn’t 1 in 88. It was more like 1 in 23,512. To put that .004% probability in context, the National Weather Service says you’re more likely to get struck by lightning during your lifetime. Last Sunday we had the NRL grand final, and a great game it was. One thing I really took away from it was the press conference afterwards with the losing coach Craig Bellamy, and what could have easily gone into a slinging match of shoulda, coulda didn't. He held himself extremely professionally, particularly as there was an incident that could have swung the match and changed the outcome, but his response to this was, "It doesn't matter what I think. We can only control what we can control". No amount of him kicking the dirt or complaining will change the result. It was a very stoic approach, and very impressive considering what had just happened, and he said that is a philosophy that Melbourne has at their core, and he demonstrated that perfectly. We have to understand, that doesn't mean we don't go out and try things and push the limit.
