"The impacts of war can be felt far outside the actual battlefield. Russia’s war against Ukraine has set off historic levels of migration, in addition to huge environmental and economic impacts. Modern war also disproportionately affects gender and sexual minorities, something we are seeing in Ukraine even as Putin's anti-LGBTQ+ agenda seeks to relentlessly drive support for the war at home. How can a queer-studies focus advance conversations about decolonization in East European and Eurasian Studies? To address this question, Queer Focus will have six virtual panels featuring speakers from various disciplines and institutions. Panelists and participants will explore how gendered regimes were constitutive of Russo-centric relationships of power, defining the region and how we study it, as we collectively grapple with what it means to re-examine our current research, teaching, and institutional practices."

💲You’ve heard of the Gender Pay Gap, but what about the Representation Gap? 🇺🇸Today, the U.S. government isn’t close to having gender parity due to structural and institutional barriers that limit women's odds of success at every stage of the electoral process. 📣That’s why DF grantee Represent Women identifies and advocates for reforms that make running for office accessible to a more diverse group of candidates. If you’re curious about where your local legislature stands in terms of gender parity, check out their Gender Parity Index: https://lnkd.in/egHDKYDp

New special issue of the Journal of Historical Pragmatics: Corpus-Pragmatic Studies of Democratization in Public Discourses: New perspectives, methods and materials. I had the privilege to co-edit this issue with Turo Hiltunen and Turo Vartiainen. The issue includes papers studying democratization using methods of corpus-pragmatics. I co-authored a paper dealing with activist speeches and how in-groups and out-groups are constructed in them. We found out that activist speeches creatively use pronouns to create these groups. For instance, activists can either speak as one of those for whom they are speaking or place themselves outside that group. Also, we noticed that activist speeches show a trend towards a more generic engagement, as the more recent speeches (e.g. on climate change and LGBTQ+ rights) were not as focused on creating us vs them dichotomies as the earlier speeches (e.g. on women's rights and civil rights). https://lnkd.in/eMK-dxjw

Our paper, Polygamy on Trial: Analyzing Anti-Polygamy Legislation in Nineteenth-Century United States, is finally published! This study examines nineteenth-century United States anti-polygamy legislation, focusing on its intersections with multiculturalism and minority rights. By analyzing the historical and legal aspects of these laws, we identify their impact on Mormon communities and immigrant groups, aimed at enforcing cultural assimilation. Our findings reveal tensions between religious freedom and societal concerns over polygamy, particularly in Christian contexts. The research highlights a paradox in liberal democracies, where safeguarding minority rights often clashes with societal values, leading to legislation against practices seen as disruptive. How did a stigmatised group in Roman times use this stigma to create their own religious authority? In our most recent issue, Asuman Lätzer-Lasar's (The Philipp University of Marburg) article "The Heterarchy of the Roman Galli: Womanhood as Tool for Creating Religious Authority" explores the ways in which the galli, Roman priests who worshipped the goddess Mater Magna, used their perceived 'otherness' in Roman society to increase their status in the social hierarchy.
