The decision to harvest a particular cultivar is one made after careful consideration. Viticulturists and winemakers are constantly assessing the weather conditions, the flowering, the berry set, and the vineyard health as guiding indicators of when to harvest. These keenly trained eyes and palates are earned, from years of working with each individual vineyard, tasting how the site ripens its grapes, and trusting oneself to make the call to harvest. The factor that still holds the most weight when deciding when to harvest is the taste of the grapes and the texture of the tannins from the skins. __________ #harvest2024 #winemaking #wineeducation

What do you know about the Winkler Index? The Winkler Index, a game-changer developed in the 1940s, categorizes grape-growing climates in California based on heat accumulation, guiding winegrowers in planting the perfect vines for optimal ripening. While this index has been successful within and beyond California, alternatives like the Huglin Index are considered for more tailored vineyard development. To adapt to rising temperatures, considering factors like soil and microclimate has become important, as well as engaging with the local growing community. Wine Business - Evolution of world vineyard surface area The world's vineyard surface area continued its decline, shrinking by 0.5% from 2022 to 7.2 million hectares. This trend, observed for the third consecutive year, was driven by the removal of vineyards in major vine-growing regions (including all types of grapes) across both hemispheres. In 2023, the top 6 countries represent 56% of the world total, while the EU and the Southern Hemisphere account for 45% and 12%, respectively #vineyard #vineyards #winebusiness #wineindustry #winemarket #vinegrowing #vines

“Originally, El Pomar was the almond capital of California with 1,375 acres of almond trees. Gradually the almond industry moved to the San Joaquin Valley for easier farming. Vineyards took over. There are more than 2,000 acres of vines today. This is a very special appellation; however, it is more of a growing region than where you will find wineries to visit. Many of the well-known wineries you know have vineyards here or purchase grapes from growers in this El Pomar AVA. ” Excerpt taken from the newest edition of the book: Exploring Wine Regions: The Central Coast of California #winelovers #booklover #winestagram #wine #grapes #winegrapes

Lovely views here at a point close to the highest point in the vineyard; approximately 280m above sea level, whilst the highest point at 330m (making this vineyard one of the highest in the area). One of the Benefits of the high elevation: Due to Stellenbosch’s warm and dry summers, grapes in the vineyard may ripen at rapid rates and leave them susceptible to over-ripening and loss of the grapes natural acidity at early stages. ☀️The higher up you go, the further you are away from the “heater” that is keeping us all warm - the ground that has absorbed the warm from the Sun. The high altitude brings forth cooler temperatures and assists in regulating the warm and dry summers and therefore assist grapes preserve their natural acid profile. #stellenbosch #harvesting #wine #wineindustry #vineyard #views

During the #summer vacations, many of our employees relax with their families in the mountains, in the Mediterranean or on the terrace at home. However, not everyone can take time out at the same time - our bottling operations have no summer break. While the harvests in the southern hemisphere have already been brought in, the harvest in Europe is just around the corner. We have wines in our tanks that need to be bottled now so that they can be sold soon. At the same time, we are of course keeping an eye on the global wine market. 2023 was a year of lower yields worldwide - the last time so little wine was produced was more than 60 years ago. Extreme weather conditions led to significant harvest losses in many countries. We expect a slight improvement this year. However, the clearing of 10,000 hectares of vineyards in Chile has also affected the wine market. In addition, there has been a slight decline in consumption, particularly in China. The wine market is and remains highly competitive. There is therefore hardly any time for our employees to take a breather. But an ice cream to cool off on hot days is always a must before the orders from our international customers are processed again with commitment and competence. 🍦 #PSSWeinkellerei #wineindustry #winelover #winemaking #bottling #harvest #viticulture #winebusiness #wineeconomy #winery
