Construction is focused on the small details - and they’re extremely important. For commercial construction projects, the quality of your materials and the techniques you use to put them together are integral to the longevity of your builds. One small but highly effective component that can help create more efficient buildings is HS Butyl tape. Read our latest blog: https://lnkd.in/emaAxgRe

I found the discussion to be really educational and it got me thinking what role specifications have in the product selection and construction of wall assemblies (and other 'systems' made up of multiple products too). What role should building codes play and do we need some type of oversight or 'rules' that dictate or monitor such an important part of the construction, rather than an 'industry led' approach to best practice? It seems pretty obvious to anyone that knows what they're looking at when driving past a jobsite, if shortcuts are being taken with the wall assembly. Shortcuts it would seem that aren't being caught or enforced by inspectors because they keep happening. Rules (in every aspect of life) are always written because of those that can't put the good of the people over the good of themselves. It's why we have Building Codes in the first place! Its difficult to blame everything on the GC who's incentivized by a system to cut costs and build as quickly as possible. So what's the solution? I'm interested to know from the spec writers out there... are you including manufacturer's full 3-part specifications in your projects? If you use your own templates or masters, how are you ensuring compatible products for assemblies are being selected and installed correctly to prevent failures later in the life of the building? To the contractors and tradies... how often do you refer back to the specification during construction of assemblies (do you even have access to the specification on the jobsite)? How much work is done based on your previous years of experience or an 'it's how we've always done it' sort of philosophy?
A big thank you to Cole Hansen from KLAD Envelope Solutions for presenting to me and the others in attendance at last night's Okanagan Valley Construction Specifications Canada | Devis de Construction Canada Chapter meeting. It was great to learn about a part of the build where the science is often misunderstood or shortcuts are taken during the construction of the wall system itself. It really got me thinking about a part of the process I hadn't put much thought into before, and how as an industry we could overcome these challenges when the system encourages shortcuts to be taken. Thank you Cole!
