------------------------------------- Standing Buffalo Dakota Nation and Canada’s High Commissioner to the UK Strengthen Sacred Relationship with British Crown ------------------------------------- (Regina, SK – August 26, 2024) - Standing Buffalo Dakota Nation, a sovereign nation that has not signed into a formal treaty mechanism but maintains a sacred allyship with the British Crown, hosted a significant meeting with Canada’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, His Excellency Ralph Goodale. Chief Redman and the Band Council welcomed High Commissioner Goodale back to the Traditional Territories for a pivotal discussion on the enduring relationship between the Dakota-Lakota Nations and the British Crown. The hour-long meeting, held in Regina, emphasized the deep and lasting connection between Standing Buffalo Dakota Nation and the British Crown. This relationship was first formally recognized by King George III in 1763 and is symbolized by the medals preserved by Standing Buffalo, including one that remains in the Nation’s possession. High Commissioner Goodale conveyed that King Charles III is keenly aware of these historical bonds and expressed the King’s vested interest in Indigenous matters. The conversation also addressed Aboriginal Title and the historical complexities surrounding treaties in Canada. Chief Redman highlighted the importance of the July 15th, 2024, Statement of Recognition and Apology to the Dakota and Lakota Nations. A key point of discussion centered on Standing Buffalo’s upcoming research mission to London, aimed at further strengthening the narrative of the Nation’s relationship with the British Throne. This mission seeks to explore personal records housed in British palaces that document the historical interactions between the British Monarchy and the Indigenous Nations in North America. These records are crucial for understanding the sacred relationship that has persisted across centuries. However, access to these records requires formal approval, and Standing Buffalo is actively pursuing this through correspondence with the Palace. During the meeting, Chief Redman presented High Commissioner Goodale with a traditional blanket, symbolizing Standing Buffalo’s continued commitment to this historic bond. High Commissioner Goodale, recognizing the importance of the research mission, offered to assist Standing Buffalo in facilitating communication with His Majesty King Charles III, potentially gaining access to these key historical archives which hold vital records of this allyship. The Ambassador underscored the importance of acting swiftly, as the King is deeply engaged in Indigenous issues and eager to support initiatives that foster understanding and reconciliation. The Nation expresses sincere appreciation to High Commissioner Goodale for his support and to all who participated in this significant event. #StandingBuffalo #DakotaNation #IndigenousRelations #HistoricAllyship #BritishCrown #Reconciliation

It’s great to see the Dakota finally getting some of the recognition they deserve for their long history of alliance with the Crown. So few Canadians know anything about this. British and Canadian kids should be taught this history
