Paul Weller, PE, AICP is our highlight employee for Talent Tuesday this week! We asked Paul, “What do you love about your work?” He said, “I love Cities. They are the places we gather together, and I like to make sure they work correctly from an infrastructure perspective. I also love a good spreadsheet.” Today, Paul connected with several students at the WSU Career Fair. He understands the importance of connecting with the upcoming graduates in the engineering profession. They have so much to learn, as he remembers from being a student. Paul wants to help students learn more about the profession, as knowing how it all works and connects is key. We asked Paul what advice he would give his younger self, and here’s what he said: 1. Take advantage and go see projects- See how things are built and put together. 2. Have a clear career path. 3. Stay connected- Tap into the institutional knowledge of those you work with 4. This semester I am taking a course on technical communications for engineers, which is a class that heavily focuses on the professional aspects of an engineer's work. I have learned many things from this class, but one thing that stood out to me was the work put into the job search. In order to be well prepared for career fairs, it is advisable to practice and refine a clear and defined elevator pitch. This pitch should include fundamental elements that set a candidate apart from the others, which include relevant experience, unique projects, and demonstrated interest in a desired position. Overall, the technical communications course has prepared me to analyze what sets a candidate apart from others through a well-crafted elevator pitch.

How many of you knew from an early age that you would be working in the industry/position you currently hold? I had no idea the industries I’ve worked in even existed as a young person. I’m looking forward to speaking with the students at Lone Star College-CyFair Lone Star College during the OGV Group Recruitment Fair 2024 about my career journey. As I’ve spoken with many groups at various grade levels, I’ve discovered that the vocations available in the offshore energy industry can be a bit esoteric for many young people. While many of us struggle to keep up with staffing needs, especially when trying to recruit qualified personnel, it becomes extremely important that we, as an industry, participate in events such as this to continue our outreach and educate students on the various possibilities after graduation. 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐭 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐓𝐀𝐂𝐓𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 𝐣𝐨𝐛 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐫 Attending the CONTACT2024 life science job fair organized by BioContact e.V. on April 17, 2024 at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg was an incredibly enriching experience. It was a privilege to engage with industry experts, make valuable connections, and gain firsthand knowledge of what companies are seeking in potential candidates. One highlight was the insightful panel discussion on the timeless debate: skill versus attitude. Understanding the perspectives of experienced professionals and their emphasis on the right mindset alongside technical prowess was truly eye-opening. It reinforced the importance of not just what we bring to the table skill-wise but also the attitude and approach we embody. These interactions have not only broadened my understanding of the industry but have also inspired me to continually develop both my skills and attitude to stand out in today's competitive landscape. Unemployed Notes #2 Last Saturday while every unemployed IT person was having fun in Vilnius, due to some scheduling issues had to be content with the job fair in Klaipeda. On the fun side of things, I did visit one in Kaunas last month, so a comparison is in order. ▪ Klaipeda did have a much better staffing situation in the booths. Small booths were run by at least 2 people, whereas the bigger ones had 3-4; ▪ Klaipeda staff was more proactive. Got approached first in most of the booths I stopped at; ▪ Kaunas had more variety in industries represented; ▪ Both were primarily focused on low-level employees but seems like Klaipeda had more offers for more educated/experienced ones; ▪ Both would have been great for engineers; ▪ Kaunas was more busy, crowded, and in turn, loud. I believe it was caused by the space allocated. This made navigating and having conversations a bit difficult. In general, I would give the win to Klaipeda, but... is there any point to job fairs in general? What's your experience? My experience so far. Most of the information is available online. The conversations are a bit awkward as you are not 100% sure what positions you can apply for, and the employer has zero info on you. The effectiveness is very low due to the nature of the format. At best you will have a surface-level conversation, leave your resume, and exchange contact info. Not sure if I am approaching the job fair format in the wrong way, or if the format is outdated, but I don't think I am going to go out of my way to visit more of them.

After wrapping up Georgia Tech's spring all-majors career fair, we recognize the importance of adding club experiences that you're most passionate and excited about to your resume and portfolio. That's why CoLab's Melanie Chen and Michelle Lee are here to share their opinions on the best clubs to join at Georgia Tech as a Computational Media major (don't worry LMC majors, you're next!).
