While the performers (#VickyKaushal especially), do well to look and act like real-life characters, the real essence of the persons they are representing is missing. It’s the writing that is faulty here. To make Maneckshaw look larger-than-life heroic, the screenplay does a deliberate disservice to all the other political stalwarts (Nehru and Indira Gandhi especially) represented here. The music is distracting at best. Archival footage helps keep the narrative tethered to reality but the sketchy representations and episodic leaps don’t allow any fleshing out of the central character through forty years of his life story and achievements. This adulatory romanticised approach fails the real person that Sam Maneckshaw was.

Cast Jack Nicholson and Marlon Brando in a Western and you get box office gold, surely? So why is Arthur Penn’s movie The Missouri Breaks (1976) considered a ‘failure’ by many...? Did Brando’s eccentric, fragmented, inconsistent performance really derail the narrative, or does it actually bring the theme into clearer focus? Perhaps the film helps us to understand something about our own eccentric, fragmented and inconsistent world. All the films explored in Film, Negation and Freedom: Capitalism and Romantic Critique (Bloomsbury Academic, 2023) share a common theme: they find a way to turn failure into success, and success into failure. #ThrowBackThursday This week, we've dug into the JPH collection and located another excellent film analysis; Hank Nelson's 'Kokoda: Pushing the Front Line', https://buff.ly/3Yj8asa Abstract: From the release of Damien Parer's Kokoda Frontline in 1942, there have been several high quality documentary films and many popular and scholarly histories on the battles on the Kokoda Track, but until Alister Grierson's Kokoda of 2006 there was no feature film. Initially well received by an Australian public, Kokoda raises several important questions for historians. Makers of films on historical events properly draw on contemporary images: they are evocative of a time and place, guides to all that detail of dress, manners and possessions that take a crew so long to get right and that the pedantic delight in criticising, and they provide templates for shot composition. But the images in films are not subjected to the same scrutiny that historians apply to written sources. In Grierson's Kokoda, images are drawn from somewhere on the Track and relocated and, in one case, taken from another battle and another place. Film critics were concerned with placing Kokoda within the history of war films and evaluating it against other war films. When film critics considered whether Kokoda was ‘real’ or ‘convincing’, they were judging whether the behaviour of soldiers in battle moved and engaged an audience. Almost no film critics considered the film's accuracy as history, and it does repeat many popular errors about the Kokoda battles. Finally, it is interesting to consider what has been omitted and whether this has been the inevitable consequence of reducing an event spread over 100 kilometres of Track and several months to 92 minutes of film time, and whether the choices have diminished the end product as film or as history. More historians need to make themselves familiar with film and engage more readily in the public evaluation of those films claimed to be based on ‘true’ stories and illuminating what have come to be accepted as determining events in national histories. Viet and Nam (Cannes Un Certain Regard Official Selection) gets distribution in North America through Strand Releasing. Here’s the official synopsis: In the underground coal mines, Nam and Viet, young miners, face danger and darkness. One prepares to leave for a new life, but they must find Nam's father's remains, a soldier lost in a faraway forest, retracing the past through memories. Marcus Hu, co-president of Strand Releasing, stated: “Viet and Nam was one of the most mesmerizing films I’ve seen in awhile, romantic, tragic and tender directed with a unique style that embodies the auteurs we cultivate.” One scene in the film, of the two men walking on the beach, is a sophisticated piece of filmmaking; it is utterly simple, but the craft is dialed in. Consider the dolly: effortlessly following without so much as a trace. Consider the color palette: the men almost blend into the sea. Consider the evocative dialogue: “The crumbs are the corpses of shells.” Personally, I have too many deep hidden memories about the beaches and jungles of Vietnam that it is difficult to keep them completely bottled. A theme of this film appears to be that "bottled up" memories exist on both sides of a past war. This film does have artistic quality.
