fibrisTerre is now an International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) Corporate Associate. Why? ISSMGE is ‘the pre-eminent professional body representing the interests and activities of Engineers, Academics and Contractors all over the world that actively participate in geotechnical engineering.’ Founded in 1936, the ISSMGE provides a global focus for professional leadership to some 90 Member Societies and around 20,000 individual members. fibrisTerre is a supplier of specialist instruments (strain, deformation and temperature monitoring using fiber optics) to a global market. So here's why we joined: The global reach of #ISSMGE reflected our ambitions and we have huge respect for: ✅ the work of the thirty Technical Committees (https://lnkd.in/gW35eapU), ✅ the quality of information shared at conferences, in publications and in its video series. ✅ the Young Members Presidential Group, which provides a network of liaisons around the world. ✅ papers being open source, so important in spreading knowledge and good practice. ✅ the valuable online library which is freely available. Here is the ISSMGE video and yes, in addition to the above 'logical' reasons to join, fibrisTerre loves geotechnical engineering ❤️ : https://lnkd.in/gbZr58zB #ISSMGE #geotechnicalengineering #groundengineering #fiberopticsensing #infrastructuremonitoring #civilengineering #geotechnics

I'm thrilled to announce that our recent paper, titled "Micro-Macro Assessment of The Pile Bearing Capacity Interaction with Single and Double Voids in Different Soil Densities Using The Discrete Element Method," has been published in ASCE Publishing prestigious International Journal of Geomechanics. In this study, our team explored the impact of soil variability, influenced by environmental changes, on geotechnical considerations. We focused on underground voids, which significantly affect subsoil structures such as piles. Using a two-dimensional Discrete Elements Method (DEM) model, we investigated voids in sandy soil and their effects on pile behavior, particularly bearing capacity and lateral pressure coefficients. Our results reveal that voids can reduce pile bearing capacity by up to 63% in critical zones, mainly due to decreased resistance at the pile's tip. This highlights the crucial importance of understanding void effects for safe subsoil structure design in geotechnical engineering. I would like to express my deep gratitude to the team members, Prof. Alireza Saeedi Azizkandi and Saman Ghaderi, for their exceptional efforts, contributions, and collaboration. FUN FACTS ABOUT GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING Geotechnical engineering, despite its serious and crucial role in construction and infrastructure, has its share of intriguing and entertaining aspects. From its ancient roots to modern-day marvels, here are some fun and enlightening facts that shed light on this remarkable field: Ancient Beginnings: Geotechnical engineering has ancient origins, with evidence of early civilizations, such as the Egyptians and Mesopotamians, employing soil mechanics principles in constructing massive structures like pyramids and ziggurats. The art of foundation design goes back thousands of years! Soil Profile as a Fingerprint: Each location has a unique soil profile, like a fingerprint. Geotechnical engineers study these profiles to understand the soil's properties and behavior, crucial for safe construction. Earth's Permeability: The Earth's permeability varies widely. While dry sand can be quite permeable, clay is less so. Understanding these differences is vital in geotechnical engineering, especially in the design of foundations and drainage systems. Permafrost Engineering: In regions with permafrost, engineers use specialized techniques to build on frozen ground. These methods involve insulating foundations to prevent thawing and preserve stability. 🔎 The Standard Penetration Test (SPT) 📖 [IS 2131] is an in-situ test of soil used to determine various engineering properties of soil like the relative density and the angle of shearing resistance. This test gives a measure of soil strength and is extensively used across the world for subsurface exploration. The various soil parameters obtained from this test are used for the design of foundations and also help in ascertaining the viability of the soil for engineering purposes. 📞 Contact strucrete consulting for conducting the soil investigation/Standard penetration test(Lab and field tests).
