My top advocacy takeaways from today: 1) Speak from your heart 2) Connect as humans 3) Trust you’re ready It’s so easy to overthink the details… the data… the acts and bills and needs for which we are advocating and want to get “right.” But while all of that helps, the most powerful moments today weren’t about exact details of the cancer survivorship acts we championed. They were about the power of story, the connection that happens when one human shares a personal story and another says “I hear you.” Grateful to have shared today with 4 fellow advocates from NY - with meetings in the offices of both our senators and 4 of our house reps - as advocates from many other states did the same. Thank you National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship for organizing a truly incredible day. More photos and reflections soon. For now, I’d love to hear from you: a) what you’d like to know from today? b) what is your best advocacy tip? c) what drives you to advocate? Choose any of the above or all 3! ;-) #CPAT24 #NCCS #patientadvocacy

While over 75% of White men survive five years or more after a melanoma diagnosis, only 51.7% of Black men do. During this Black History Month, let's not only reflect on the past but also look ahead to ways we can do better in healthcare. Ways we can improve this gap? 1. Education Rashida Bobb, a new friend in NYC, founded a non-profit that focuses on awareness, education and advocacy after seeing how late detection impacted her own family. She accurately said when we first met "Low Risk Doesn’t Mean No Risk of Melanoma for Darker Complexions" (sheliahlillyfoundation) 2. Access At Modern Ritual Health, we're not just leveraging technology; we're advocating for change. We are working with physicians in local communities to increase rapid access to board-certified dermatologists who are competent, caring and trained in treating diverse patient populations. Let's think about history AND forward-looking solutions to bridge healthcare gaps. #BlackHistoryMonth #HealthEquity #SkinCancerAwareness

Humanizing Strategy | Helping social profit leaders navigate change through participatory planning that aligns their team, improves morale, and helps everyone buy in to the goals of the organization.
When navigating change, it can seem logical to keep it under wraps, especially when uncertain about its outcomes. Yet, consider this illuminating example: CASE STUDY: "Susan G. Komen for the Cure - Planned Parenthood Controversy" THE ORGANIZATION: Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a revered social profit championing breast cancer research, awareness, and aid. THE PROBLEM: Back in 2012, the organization stirred controversy by discontinuing funding for breast cancer screenings at Planned Parenthood clinics. CONSEQUENCES: This choice ignited swift public outrage. Critics charged the decision with political motives, endangering women's access to vital health services. The fallout, aggravated by inadequate engagement with stakeholders from both camps, manifested as widespread protests, unfavorable media attention, and a substantial donation decline for Susan G. Komen. LESSON: Engaging supporters, advocates, and affected communities permits organizations to anticipate repercussions, comprehend broader ramifications, and ensure alignment of choices with their core values and mission. This case, alongside many others, live rent free in my mind whenever a leader suggests secrecy! Engagement may take many forms, but this example underscores the value of seeking input, foreseeing consequences, and aligning with mission and values. These steps remain essential in navigating change, while preserving trust and support. #change #facilitator #facilitation #HardTruthsAboutChange

At You're Worth Fighting 4, we're committed to a future where everyone has access to the support and resources they need in the fight against cancer. To ensure our board reflects the communities we serve, we're actively seeking nominations for passionate individuals who can bring a diversity of perspectives and experiences to the table. Why is diversity important? A diverse board brings a wider range of ideas, strengthens decision-making, and allows us to better understand and serve the needs of all those affected by cancer. How can you help? 1. Do you know someone who would be a great fit for our board? Please nominate them by dropping their names in the comment box. 2. Share this post with your network! The more people who know, the stronger our pool of potential board members will be. Together, we can make a real difference in the fight against cancer.
