Right! ... then came: -Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) - Late 1970s-1980s: Early precursors to internet chatrooms, BBS allowed users to connect via a modem to post messages, share software, play text games, and converse. Typically hosted on a single computer, they supported one user at a time. -CompuServe and AOL Chatrooms - Late 1980s-Early 1990s: These services offered more advanced, themed chatrooms for real-time text conversations, marking a more commercialized evolution from BBS. -IRC (Internet Relay Chat) - Developed in 1988: One of the first internet chat protocols, IRC facilitated real-time communication in separate chat rooms, known for its simplicity and versatility. -Usenet Newsgroups - Early 1980s: More akin to public message boards, these newsgroups formed digital communities for posting and reading messages on various topics. (Downloaded tons of stuff!) -Multi-User Dungeons (MUDs): Text-based, multiplayer virtual worlds primarily for gaming in the early internet era, MUDs combined gaming with social interaction elements, prefiguring modern social media. I also remember "slapping people with a trout" (mirc?) and ICU (Uh .. OH!) Cheers! #feelingblessed #lookingback

General purpose retro gaming enthusiast / scanner / collector at Kasettilamerit -digital archeology team, Friend of The Finnish Museum of Games.
Wise words from Argonaut's Jez San in Finnish computer magazine MikroBitti's interview (4/94) (Rough FIN -> ENG -translation by Google) "People should approach the hype of new devices with reservations. The devices are never as wonderful as the ads claim." "Great tech specs does not necessarily guarantee good games or machines." "The winning machine will get the best programs and games and the best price. The winner is not the one with the best polygons, the most color or the fastest processor." "Atari and 3DO gave great-sounding promises and metrics to the media, but how many people actually know what a "pixel per second" means. You shouldn't be blinded by the numbers, but study the available games. Some of the specifications of these "miracle devices" are straight up BS!"
