It has been wonderful to witness a gradual shift away from harmful philanthropic practices over the last four years. This latest offering of a brown bag session that convened Mama Cash, the Robert Carr Fund (RCF), Wilde Ganzen, and Aidsfonds for a sharing on different approaches to participatory grantmaking was delightful! It was fascinating to hear them echo similar lessons on the benefits of the practice despite being at very different junctures along the journey. Wilde Ganzen has just completed its first year of participatory grantmaking, while Mama Cash started transitioning into the practice three years ago - a process that called for shifts in policies, procedures, and even in the staff complement. The trailblazing RCF had participatory grantmaking 'in its DNA,’ making its debut as a participatory grantmaker in 2012. The funders took on different models of participatory grantmaking. We know from Evans’ 2015 research on participatory grantmaking (https://lnkd.in/gg5bCp6b) that there are at least two main models: participatory committees or collective groups, with various permutations. For instance, the RCF’s emphasis on balancing power differentials between funders and activists during the decision-making process implies that RCF uses a participatory committee model of grantmaking, where the decision-making body for grants comprises both communities and funders. This is called a representative committee. I appreciated that the RCF raised the importance of intentional inclusion of activists, providing whatever support is needed to enable participation equal to what funders receive from their institutions. I imagine this includes a travel budget for in-person meetings and compensation for time spent evaluating grant applications. A common theme that emerged was that relationships of trust are at the heart of participatory grantmaking. Funders show that they trust the leadership and agency of movements when they provide long-term, flexible funding. Consequently, communities can respond to changing contexts, invest in institutional strengthening (including a healthy pot of reserves), and retain talented staff - avoiding the non-profit starvation cycle. The conversation did not shy away from addressing the reticence that funders may have about adopting participatory grantmaking, such as concerns about the loss of control, weighing risk appetites, doing due diligence, measuring impact, and managing donor priorities. In response, RCF named the liberation and joy inherent in ceding power, tapping into collective wisdom, and taking a participatory approach to measuring impact; Wilde Ganzen spoke about the importance of accepting that the role of funders today IS to shift power, as uncomfortable as it may feel. #ShiftThePower #ParticipatoryGrantmaking
