AMD has issued a warning about the high-severity SinkClose vulnerability, affecting multiple generations of its EPYC, Ryzen, and Threadripper processors. . This flaw allows attackers with Kernel-level (Ring 0) access to elevate privileges to Ring -2, a highly privileged level associated with System Management Mode (SMM). . Exploiting this vulnerability, attackers can install nearly undetectable malware by bypassing security features, as Ring -2 is isolated from the operating system and hypervisor. . Discovered by IOActive researchers, the SinkClose flaw has existed undetected for nearly 20 years.
