And now the counter argument, is it right and proper that in 2024, the employer contributions for a new teacher and all teachers is now 28.68%? The Department of Education pay over £1 billion a month in contributions. New teachers want flexibility, they don’t understand or agree with the concept that in the 21st century, there should be a surviving spouse pension (a small element of their employee contribution will be going towards the surviving spouse pension of someone they have more than likely not met yet and who in all likelihood will have their own career and pension when they do hook up), they want to be able to take a gap year or two, they want an ethical choice about how and where their pensions are invested. They would much prefer a starting salary of £36k plus a decent NEST (defined contribution) scheme with a employer contribution of circa 10% which gave them choices in life rather than a starting salary of £33k plus a TPS Pension. This would also help with recruitment. I know all of this because I have spoken with many new teachers. Pensions are very important but the Teachers’ Pension is outdated and no longer fit for purpose or financially sustainable. The recent increase in the employer pension of 5% from 1st April is not fully funded by the Department meaning many schools will have to make small cuts elsewhere to compensate. Yet again, students will lose out.
