How old did dinosaurs get? That is what Drs. Cary Woodruff, me (Dr. Brian Curtice aka Dr. BC), and Dr. John Foster set out to answer on the longest dinosaurs to ever live, sauropods. Previously, the oldest sauropod was a Camarasaurus that came in at 40 years of age, and the oldest dinosaur, the carcharodontosaurid Meraxes, was 50 years old. Results from osteohistologic studies of bones of the 110' long Diplodocus (= Seismosaurus) hallorum from New Mexico and the second Supersaurus vivianae ever discovered, the 120'+ "Jimbo" from Wyoming shattered the previous records. The big Diplodocus was found to be 60 years old! Although the Supersaurus specimen is likely older still, we unfortunately were unable to determine age because the bone is so remodeled we were unable to gather any evidence of a numeric age, something none of us had ever observed before. It is truly an ancient animal, so old we can't give it a number! Our software analyses conjectured 225 years (!), a number we have no confidence whatsoever in, but is illustrative of how remodeled the bone is. Fascinating new research reveals that pterosaurs, the flying reptiles of the early Jurassic period, had unique diets! This discovery, made by scientists from the University of Portsmouth and Germany's Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde Stuttgart, shows distinct dietary habits among different pterosaur species. Dr. Roy Smith of the University of Portsmouth shared that the discovery of preserved stomach contents provided "smoking gun" evidence of pterosaur diets. By analyzing fossils, the team determined that the species Dorygnathus consumed small fish, while Campylognathoides enjoyed squid for its last meal. The pterosaurs lived around 182 million years ago in what is now southwestern Germany, and the findings shed light on how these species could coexist. Dr. Smith noted the rarity of finding fossilized stomach contents, saying it gives scientists “a unique and fascinating glimpse” into ancient ecosystems and the interactions of these species. Dr. Samuel Cooper, also from Portsmouth, added that the evidence of squid remains in Campylognathoides' stomach is "particularly exciting." This discovery suggests that Dorygnathus and Campylognathoides were each adapted to different diets, allowing them to live side-by-side with minimal competition. This research, published in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, offers a deeper look into the lives of these prehistoric creatures, enhancing our understanding of their diets, behaviors, and the ancient environments they inhabited.
