American Single Malt is the next frontier of American whiskey. Don’t believe me? Look at the myriad of spirits suppliers who are either buying brands or launching new (brands or line extensions) to capitalize on the trends (fastest growing segment in whiskey). While this is great to see and needed for category success, don’t taste one and judge all. There are many different styles, profiles, and quality levels within the space. As more enter, the need for a designated ASM set within the American whiskey set is necessary (as Bourbon & Rye have done before). Catagory education for customer and consumer alike is critical (check out www.ASMacademy.com). If you want to taste the pinnacle of ASM, pick up a bottle of Courage & Conviction, the most awarded American Single Malt. #whisky #whiskey #American #AmericanSingleMalt #WhiskeyAdvocate #CourageAndConviction #awardwinning

Beam Suntory celebrates Auchentoshan history with Taiwan-exclusive whisky To celebrate 200 years since its establishment in 1823 Beam Suntory-owned Lowland distillery Auchentoshan has released a 24-year-old single malt in partnership with Ever Rich Duty Free. The 24-year-old bottling is available exclusively at Taiwan duty-free stores, with the retailer allocated 774 bottles at a recommended retail price of US$270. Unlike many Scottish distillers Auchentoshan uses a triple distillation process; an extended maturation process that it says produces a fresh, fruity flavour profile for easy drinking. Susan Williamson, Distillery Manager at Auchentoshan, commented: “We have joined a rare club of distilleries to reach their third century and it’s a testament to the quality and versatility of our whisky that the horizon looks so bright. “We couldn’t let such a big birthday pass us by without bottling something special, so this 24 year old is a nod to the past whilst raising a glass to the future.” Bottled at 43% alcohol by volume (ABV), the tasting notes for the whisky centre around candied citrus peel, creamy vanilla, moist raisins, and chocolate-coated almonds. The aroma is mimetic of heavy fruit focus, comprising mint leaves, menthol, beeswax, green grapes, autumnal and citrus fruit. WHISKY GALORE 2 : THE SINGLETON Creating a new single malt from scratch was an interesting challenge. It was the mid-1980s and the only malt in IDV's stable was Knockando. At the time I described malts as "aloof, subdued in their presentation and in taste terms not very accessible to uninitiated drinkers." Our way into the category was to create a single malt for blended whisky drinkers. Why aim for 4% of the market - malt drinkers - when you could target the other 96%? We didn't have a distillery, so we looked for a brand name. We used one from a gin idea we'd tried a decade earlier. It was almost a generic name for a single malt! The packaging, by Gerry Barney, echoed the showier style of Glenfiddich rather than the more remote malts like Lagavulin or Laphroiag. And the accessible whisky itself came from the J&B distillery at Auchroisk. It had a lovely sweet, estery taste which provided the underlying character of J&B Rare. A year after launch, The Singleton won a 'best in Britain' award after it had been blind taste-compared by a panel of experts against all of Scotland's most famous malts. Following a beautiful pack upgrade in the early 2000s, The Singleton is now No. 4 in single malts worldwide. And its name enables it to accommodate malts from a variety of distilleries : Auchroisk, Dufftown and Glen Ord. As with many other ideas, the real credit goes to the IDV team led by David Maxwell Scott. They bought the basic idea in a heartbeat and implementation followed quickly afterwards. Where to start with Independent Bottlings: There are several benefits when comparing independent bottlings to distillery bottlings. 1. Independent bottlings are usually single casks or small batch releases. There is a focus solely on the flavour of the whisky, as opposed to distilleries ensuring consistency and repeatability across successive large batches of a core product. 2. They are often cask strength and naturally presented. Whilst some independent bottlers release whisky watered down to a pre-determined drinking strength, many will simply barrier filter any bits out of the whisky, and bottle it at cask strength. They rarely chill-filter or colour their whisky (practices sometimes employed by the industry which I will go into in another post), so the whisky is presented in its most natural form. It is worth noting though, cask strength whisky can be pretty potent stuff! Do not be dissuaded from watering it down to a strength at which you can enjoy it. The point of a cask strength whisky is that you can determine the strength you want to drink it at. It doesn't mean that the whisky is perfect for everyone as is. 3. Independent bottlers champion distilleries with little or no core range. This is perhaps my favourite thing about independent bottlings. They shine a light on distilleries which would otherwise be unknown to single malt drinkers. For many distilleries, the majority of their output is destined for blended whiskies. If not for independent bottlers bottling their whisky as single malt, they would not have the cult followings they do. ------------------------------------------------------------------ So, where to start! Here are a few distilleries who owe their status in the whisky community mainly to independent bottlers. Some do have a few distillery bottlings, but the independent bottlings are something else!: - Clynelish - Ben Nevis - Mortlach - Longmorn - Blair Athol - Glentauchers - Ardmore - Caol Ila And here are a few independent bottlers to check out. There are many more, but these are a good starting point.: - Gordon & Macphail - Signatory Vintage - Cadenheads - Berry Bros. & Rudd - The Whisky Agency - Thompson Bros. - Scotch Malt Whisky Society (membership required to buy) ------------------------------------------------------------------ Questions? Comment or DM. Let's talk whisky!

Several interesting points in this interview w/ Melkon Khosrovian (Thanks for taking the time Melkon!) 🛋️🍹 Relaxation positioning "It really brings up the question, what is the purpose of a cocktail? We settled on the cocktail occasion being to transition people from work mode to relax mode... that’s why we tell our retail partners that they should be in the same section as alcohol, because they do the same thing as liquor and they are used in the same way." 💲🔍 Justification for NA pricing "...with non-alc cocktails, customers have to really enjoy the taste in order to drink them, which means we make them with high-quality ingredients and that costs more...I think they’re (retailers are) seeing that these products garner a higher price-point because the clients that are looking for this stuff are more sophisticated." 💡🏭 The need for smaller organizations to innovate "As a little company, you have to deliver more than you charge. We have to out-deliver on quality and value, so we do it through innovation in terms of production and flavor development." Longmorn launches 18YO and 22YO single malts Speyside whisky distiller Longmorn has committed to only bottling whiskies aged for 18 years or more as it introduces two new single malts. The new Longmorn 18 Years Old and Longmorn 22 Years Old will form the foundations on the producer’s whisky portfolio. They will be released as annual single-batch whiskies. Both whiskies have been bottled at cask strength without chill-filtration or added caramel colouring. They were aged primarily in American oak casks.
