The threats are diverse and complex, targeting valuable information such as athletic performance data and personal details. Venues and arenas contain many known and unknown vulnerabilities that allow threats to target critical business services. Microsoft's proactive threat hunting and response strategies during the World Cup included detecting and quarantining pre-ransomware activity targeting healthcare facilities. The report emphasizes collaboration among organizations, sponsors, hosts, and venues, and offers recommendations such as implementing a comprehensive security framework, user awareness, and partnering with reputable cybersecurity firms. For sports fans out there, the latest issue of #Microsoft Cyber Signals is an excellent read on the risks and complexities involved in securing sporting events such as the #fifaworldcup It turns out that ~70% of sports organizations experience at least one cyber-attack per year, significantly higher than the average across businesses in the UK. High-profile sporting events are magnets for cyberattacks because of the scale of connected devices and interconnected networks needed to run in these environments. A single misconfigured device, exposed password, or overlooked third-party connection can lead to data loss and even extortion for coaches, athletes, and fans. (think of data on athletic performance, competitive advantage, and personal information) To protect the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar, Microsoft provided critical cybersecurity support and best practices including SOC team augmentation, cyber risk assessments, best practices around privileged access, implementing multi-layered security frameworks with firewalls and strong encryption, and educating employees and stakeholders about cybersecurity best practices.
