Paying tribute to a legend of the game at the Football Writers’ Association Awards 👏 FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström and FIFA Chief of Global Football Development Arsène Wenger were both present as footballing legend Dennis Bergkamp received the Football Writers’ Association Tribute Award for his achievements during his 11-year spell at Arsenal FC. Bergkamp claimed three English Premier League titles and three FA Cups during his time at Arsenal. He also played and scored at two FIFA World Cups, including netting one of the most dramatic match-winning goals of all-time as the Netherlands beat defending champions Argentina in the quarter-finals at the 1998 tournament in France. FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström said: “It is a great honour for me and for FIFA to be here to recognise one of the greatest playmakers we have seen.” Arsène Wenger, who managed Dennis Bergkamp for 10 years at Arsenal, gave a speech in tribute to his former player: “That mark you put in the hearts of people who love football all over the world, is absolutely second to none and is remembered everywhere. For that, because we share one passion, for that’s the quality of the game we love, I would just like to thank you very much for that.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/eQfCWSbT

REFEREE FIFA

I remember from my childhood, commenters used to call him “non-flying Dutch” by analogy with a ghost ship legend and also that fact that he was afraid of flying by aircrafts. Just a tiny bit on this post, if I may FIFA.. Argentina weren’t defending champs in 98, Brazil were.

Congratulations to Dennis. Loved his explanation of the reason for the difference between his "Dennis" and "Denis" Law - with the single "n" - while having his conferment interview. He was named after the Man United legend. NB: Argentina were not defending champions at the 1998 World Cup. Please correct.
