As the Courier-Mail editorial of 18 January states: “Brisbane won the right to host the 2032 Games in July 2021. The review [into infrastructure] that starts today means that two and a half years have been wasted.”   Projected facility costs have blown out significantly, and there has been debate over the best structure to deliver the Games.   The redevelopment of the Gabba, which is to be the centrepiece of the Games, hosting the opening and closing ceremonies and the athletics, is mired in controversy.   Just last week it was announced that Graham Quirk would head an independent review of Games infrastructure and costs.   While this should have been resolved at the Bid Stage, it is a welcome development.   The review should provide clarity over how the Gabba is to be redeveloped.   Importantly, the review should lead to the establishment of an infrastructure delivery authority that performs a similar role to what the Olympic Coordinating Authority undertook for Sydney 2000.   The Olympic Coordinating Authority’s key role was to plan for and provide Olympic venues and facilities, leaving the Games organising committee free to focus on the sports and other aspects.   We need an infrastructure authority for the 2032 Games that has bipartisan support to ensure that the venues are built on time and, hopefully, close to budget! #2032Olympics #brisbane2032
