Can design light up the golden years? By 2050, 1 in 6 people will be over 65. Elders often struggle with cognitive decline and reduced sensory perception, making daily tasks and social interactions more challenging. Elder-friendly designs must cater to their cognitive needs. Neuroarchitecture and biophilic design can improve memory, reduce stress, and foster social connections. Open spaces and sensory rooms enhance well-being and combat loneliness. Join us in creating innovative spaces that support our elders. #EldercareDesign #Neuroarchitecture #BiophilicDesign #FigmentsExperienceLab #InnovativeDesign #ExperienceDesign #AccessibleDesign

There are spaces and places which make my brain spin and I have to get out, shut down (or hide in a bathroom): shopping malls; fast food restaurants; busy offices where no headphones are plugged in & all notifications are on loud; walking to/from festival stages; play / theme parks; high rise car parking blocks; overcrowded beaches. How we design our spaces is crucial to support people who are neurodivergent: https://lnkd.in/eJSgjfzz Because my brain does work like this means I am passionate about #InclusiveDesign and how we design our spaces, to make sure we can thrive! #NeurodiversityCelebrationWeek

Let's Build Connected Communities Together! Architect + Researcher + Advocate I TEDx + Keynote Speaker
Shifting attitudes about mental health are changing not only how we design for well-being, but also the inner workings of the architecture field itself. 👩💼🏗🧠 💛 For #MentalHealthAwareness Month, I wanted to bring back a fabulous article by Ian Volner in ARCHITECT Magazine, by sharing a few takeaways from the wonderful piece: 1. Designing for Mental Well-being: - Architecture historically overlooks mental health concerns, focusing on physical health. - Contemporary architects recognize the importance of spaces promoting psychological healing. - Examples like the Spero Academy and Healing Spirit House demonstrate design addressing neuro-atypical individuals' needs. 2. Holistic Approach to Design: - Mental health design influences all aspects of architectural practice. - Architects emphasize viewing individuals beyond their roles, designing for basic human needs. 3. Integrating Science and Design: - Incorporating insights from clinical psychology and neuroscience into architectural education and practice is imperative. - Architects advocate for evidence-based design principles and employing mental health specialists. 4. Addressing Mental Health Within the Profession: - Workplace stress and burnout are pervasive issues in the architecture profession. - Initiatives like wellness programs aim to prioritize architects' mental health. - Advocacy for reform underscores the importance of creating healthier work environments. #mentalhealth #archtiecture #wellbeing Evelyn Lee Francis Pitts Anosha Zanjani Frederick Marks https://lnkd.in/eTTcKEW5

Accessibility is far more than ramps and Braille signage. It means Universal Design: creating an environment that can be accessed, understood and used by all people regardless of their age, size, ability or disability. According to accessibility expert Subhash Chandra Vashishth, सुभाष चंद्र वशिष्ठ, India doesn't have even one full accessible building! So that's going to be our gift to the country. You can read how we're doing it by keeping up with our Building Blog. (And if you think Subhash is wrong, please tell us in the comments where your accessible building is located. We want to see it for ourselves!) https://lnkd.in/gTpEBWFw

“For the course of the last year, I’ve been designing a framework to combine neuroscience and design in order to enhance mental well-being for my clients. In my work, I seek to understand how various shapes, colors, textures, sounds, and tastes are registered and processed in our brains and in which regions. But whether you hire a professional designer or not, it can be fascinating — and important — to understand the way your environment impacts you on a daily basis.” -Shannon Harris, Fuse Living, LLc and Homeself Neurodesign Check out the full article by Shannon Harris at the link below! https://lnkd.in/gB-BG8BR #homedesign #neurodesign #mentalhealth #sustainability #ecofriendly #greenliving

Inclusive design is about creating an environment that provides for the needs and desires of everyone. It's about ensuring those environments are welcoming and make a positive contribution to people's lives. That's why we were so pleased when, Design for the Mind, the first ever BSI advisory publication on neurodiversity and the built environment was published. It focuses on making public spaces more inclusive for people who have neurodivergent, neurodegenerative, and other neurological conditions, which may affect sensory processing and mental well-being. Find out more about Design for the Mind and why it heralds a new chapter in inclusive design. #inclusivedesign #DesignfortheMind #Inclusivity

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐬𝐲𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐁𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧: 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐇𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐁𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐫 The psychology underlying spatial design is a captivating exploration of the intricate relationship between our surroundings and behaviour. It's an amalgamation of science and art, where environments wield immense influence over our emotions and actions. Thoughtful placement of elements, manipulation of scale, and utilisation of light and colour evoke specific emotions, fostering comfort, focus, or creativity. A well-designed space can facilitate social interaction or encourage solitude, impacting productivity, mood, and even health. Understanding the psychology behind spatial design empowers architects and designers to create environments that resonate with and positively influence human behaviour, enriching our daily lives. #PsychologyOfDesign #SpatialExploration #DesignInfluence #ScienceAndArt #EmotionalEnvironments #ThoughtfulPlacement #ScaleManipulation #LightAndColourImpact #DesignEmotions #ComfortFocusCreativity #WellDesignedSpaces #SocialInteraction #DesignEmpowerment

Neuroarchitecture, Commercial Design and Public Art consulting & research | Transforming lives through the built environment | Spaces for wellbeing and economic growth.
Today I gave a class of Wayfinding at Exkema, this subject is one of the most fascinating and important topics of Neuroarchitecture to me, students were very participatory. Wayfinding, in simple words, is a process through which we orient ourselves using information that we gradually collect from our surroundings, helping us understand how it works and giving us a sense of direction and allowing us to locate ourselves. I believe that designing based on wayfinding is the key strategy, one of the first things that we should do as designers: understand how people construct their mental maps through their journey and how we can make navigation easier, how we can make understanding the space a bit simpler, because designing as if places were independent without considering how they relate isn't how we actually navigate. We all need to consider what mental image will form between these spaces. Why is this important? At an antropological level, our ability to: * Navigate * Understand space * Have a sense of direction * Have the ability to store maps in our minds Massively influenced our ability to flourish as a species, And today: Wayfinding + Understanding space -> Promotes mental health and provides Emotional security
