Could 24/7 solar power from orbit be the answer to the world's future energy challenges? 🌍🛰 It is with this question that the International Conference on Power from Space 2024, held at the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), is presented. A high-level conference with the UK Department of Energy Security and Net Zero, the RAeS, the UK Space Agency and European Space Agency - ESA. This event brought together international experts in the field to explore the latest thinking, research and challenges developed in the field. Representatives from government, industry and academia shared their passion and optimism about space-based solar power (SBSP), revealing innovative new concepts and considering the challenges that must be overcome to make it a reality. Pablo Sanmartín Andújar travelled there to keep up to date of these developments, as well as to showcase research carried out within Advances in Photovoltaic Technology (AdPVTech) that can be introduced in this field, such as optical photovoltaic converters (OPCs) based on innovative wide-bandgap materials to achieve unprecedented efficiency in high-power laser transmission (LPT). https://lnkd.in/eCXPHND7 #adpvtech #photovoltaic #conference #space #SBSP #OPC #LPT

"European nations must commit to a coordinated approach to space exploration to ensure it can be carried out in a more sustainable fashion, an association of French technology companies and research agencies has said." - said a report! Fascinating, right? Several space companies like Rocket Lab, Astra and Virgin Galactics have used offsetting as a potent tool in their sustainability journey. However, theoretical concepts of the reverse is out there too. There are theoretical proposals for using space technologies for direct carbon capture. For example, concepts like solar reflectors or orbital mirrors could potentially help cool the Earth by reflecting sunlight away, though such projects would require rigorous evaluation to avoid unintended consequences. Space-based solar power systems could generate and beam renewable energy back to Earth, potentially replacing fossil fuel-based electricity generation. By harvesting solar power in space and transmitting it via microwave or laser beams, SBSP could provide constant renewable energy, especially in remote areas. So, while we toy with ideas to prevent cross country leakage, here's a theoretical idea about inter galactic offsetting. #carboncredits #spaceandsustainability #sustainability
