As travel returns and the hospitality industry strives to recover, employers are facing challenges in attracting the right talent. In Australia, demand for hospitality staff has increased 13%. With many skilled workers leaving the industry for more flexible roles, employers must update their employer branding and candidate attraction to make themselves an option for experienced hospitality staff. Each hospitality brand has its own distinctive style, personality and benefits. This should be reflected in both consumer marketing to get customers through the door, but also for employer branding. Workers are attracted to a brand, not just the packages they offer. By developing a strong employer brand through things like EVP strategies, employee ambassador programmes, and brand toolkits, you can help shift your brand's position and open yourself up to more experienced employees. Today, we share with you the story of Juanma Bobes, Director of Human Resources at Hotel Riomar Ibiza At the core of Riomar Ibiza's vibrant work life, Juanma Bobes passionately leads as the Director of Human Resources. His international experiences have honed an empathetic and adaptable approach to human resource management, crucial in the hospitality industry. We had the chance to chat with him, uncovering the challenges, lessons, and inspirations that define his professional day-to-day. Q: What are the most rewarding challenges you've encountered in your role here? A: I'm passionate about this job and the connection between human resources and tourism. I love interacting with all employees and striving to make them feel comfortable; it's crucial since we spend about 30% of our lives working. The biggest challenge is helping them balance productivity with workplace motivation during Ibiza's intense summer season. Q: What personal life lessons do you apply to your work in human resources at Hotel Riomar Ibiza? A: Working abroad taught me the importance of adapting to different cultures and work environments. This ability is transferable to any workplace setting, learning to listen and adapt to everyone's needs without applying the same model universally. Q: If you could choose any place in the hotel to take a break, where would you relax? A: I would choose a hidden corner of our Ocean Restaurant, listening to the sound of the sea at sunset. The combination of scenery and our staff's kindness makes this the best place to truly disconnect. Q: How do you balance the human and professional aspects of managing a diverse team in a hospitality environment? A: We adopt diversity policies and treat religious and cultural differences with the utmost respect, promoting an "open door" policy for suggestions, improvements, or reporting any injustice. Q: If you could meet a historical figure to discuss leadership and people management, who would you choose and why? A: I'd be interested in talking with Pat Wadors for his emphasis on culture and employee engagement and with Frederic Taylor, considered the father of industrial management, to discuss the evolution of the profession. Q: How do you think your work at Hotel Riomar Ibiza has influenced your personal and professional growth? A: Working in an international environment and for a global company like Marriott International stimulates me to never stop learning and growing, surrounded by top-notch professionals. Juanma's perspective on human resources at Hotel Riomar Ibiza highlights the importance of empathy, adaptability, and continuous learning in creating a work environment that fosters personal and professional growth, enhancing the guest experience.
