AI Trend Alert! I like to watch the companies that are participating in leading accelerator programs as a way to identify and validate trends and themes. Looking at the companies that presented yesterday at Y Combinator's Demo Day some AI themes are clear: 1. AI Robots are going to be a really bigger thing that I initially thought. AI is improving the ability for robots to mimic human actions. When this happens (not if) the implication is that robots will be able to surpass humans in some tasks/jobs. Low churn labor that doesn't require people management who can do the job better than humans are in our future. For example, yondu is making robots that are designed to pick, stock, and face shelves in grocery stores. 2. Software acting like humans will enable software to complete entire tasks without human supervision. A couple of interesting examples: Lighthouz AI (YC S24) integrates with legacy procurement software to pull data from receipts and purchase orders to make recommendations for humans to review. One day the human review will not be needed and we will have fully autonomous procurement agents... CardLift enables credit card issuers a way to make their cards the default on ecommerce websites. 3. Domain-specific AI companies will be the really big winners. General AI is great but deep domain expertise will be the key to actually doing the real work. A couple of examples I liked from the Y Combinator cohort: Merlin AI (YC S24) has AI software to run construction businesses. In creating their software, they co-located with a construction business as they developed and refined their software. Abel Police is automating police paperwork by taking police body camera footage and turning it into completed police reports. One niche, that will widen itself about AI is Privacy. Namely, everyone would want to have their own AI, personalized, at home, doing tasks unique to them, without authorities or other people's oversight. In many cases, taken out of the wider Internet, being just in the confines of the home network. I see it coming to life in the form of self-hosted LLM, specifically as a home computer for personal / family only use. "(PC-Ai)". Data feed would come from the "home array" of smart devices, sending their metadata/para data into this PC-Ai. Which would then also offer a choice for: a. Strictly personal, out-of-hands of outside entities use; b. Anonymised before being shared with outside entities for statistics and other optimization purposes; c. Non-anonymized (which I doubt as an option, as it would be against EU's GDPR et al.) Sidenote: you have a plentitude of jailbreaked, as well as open-sourced LLMs, out there to use as a starting point to go down this route.
